NGD, my brethren. But first, a trip down memory lane. Last March, Corey (@mphsc) of Pyramid Guitars, posted a picture of an 8 string routed for a Floyd. It was to have a resin top in a swirl like the Ibby Universe. Now, as a huge fan of 8s, Floyds, and the @pondman 8 string Universe/Jem builds, I was super interested. I reached out to him, and found out it was being built by Matt Dennison from the UK. The top was sourced from Tobias Caspar. So I decided to put a deposit on it. It was finally finished last month, and I just got it. Here are the pics:
Overall, it’s a great guitar, and I’m super happy with it. I do think Matt probably doesn’t have much experience with Floyds, though, because when I got it the action was up pretty high due to some of the saddles being in the wrong order, so the 4th and 5th strings were too close to the neck when the 1st string was at a reasonable height. I took the Floyd off, reordered the saddles (so the lowest ones were on the outermost strings) grabbed a Canada Dry can, and started cutting shims to match the FB radius. FR8s have something like a 25" radius, so shimming is pretty much always necessary. You can see the shims here, lol:
Also, the pickups (which are BKP Silos) were all the way down in the cavities. The routes were suuuuper tight, so it took a bit of pulling to lift them to the proper height.
Now that I have the action down to 1mm at the 12th, I can feel that the fretwork is spectacular. It plays REALLY well. I have it tuned to F standard, because it’s 28” scale, and I have girly fingers.
I need the lower tension.
As expected, Corey was awesome with communication, updates, handling everything, etc. There was a little damage to the top near the Floyd from shipping, and he sent it to a luthier to be professionally repaired on his dime. I bought a couple of Grainger guitars from Corey years ago, and he’s always made he feel super safe and taken care of. Super transparent and fair.
Anyway, I’m happy to have another Floyd 8!
P.S. Bonus points if you know what the thread title is from.
