I played one yesterday, along with the VM 70's Squier.

Sounded great and felt really nice. I preferred the 70's one but the Surf was cool too.

If that is what they do, why bring out 20 new rehashes of the same 2 or 3 models every year? Just create the three models in their most wanted configurations each and leave it at that.

They could try doing something new, just because they have been around for ages does not mean they don't have to innovate. If everyone would think like fender do we would all still be playing only strats. There would be no Universes or 8 string guitars or extreme bodyshapes or any other progress since the 50's.

I recently received the 2012 catalog from one of europes larger music stores. It features about 6 pages of all guitar brands available, showing only a fraction of all models which are available from those companies, and then they have about 16 pages of the same 3 Fender models. That's just madness, especially since they do sell all those guitars but choose not to show them in favor of yet another strat.

Ranting a bit now :) , don't get me wrong, I like a good strat as much as anyone. I just get a bit annoyed when I see people get all worked up about Fender because they changed the color of a strat again.

Fender has done some experimenting in the past, and it's pretty much always a flop. They make what sells for them, and that happens to be adding new color or pickup options to preexisting models. That's their market, so that's what they cater to.

That aside, why would they need to try other things to appeal to other markets, when they already own other brand names that are entrenched in those markets (Jackson, Charvel, Gretsch, Guild and Hamer)?

I'll quote something Max said about Gibson in the Moderne thread, and I think in many instances it also applies to Fender:

"I don't know what folks want Gibson to do really. When they reissue cult (Moderne, RD, Grabber) and classic (Blueshawk, ES345, etc.) then folks complain about it being nothing new. When they make slightly modified models (Nighthawk, BM Explorer, FR Studio, etc.) it's just a "hehash". When they go crazy with new technology (Robot, MIDI, Modeling) it's just a gimmick. When they price models affodably (Tribute, Custom Classic, Studio Plus, Special) it's just them "cheaping out". "

before I read what this guitar actually was it kind of looked like a squier re-issue of the fender flathead tele.

definitely made me think about buying it. not like it would be hard to cover up the avril signature stuff on the headstock.

After playing the Cobain Jag, I actually really like it. Plays and sounds great. Lets just hope Fender doesn't rape his name like Dean has been doing with Dime.

I just find it ironic that Cobain really liked to use cheap beater guitars, yet Fender prices the Jag at $1300 and the Mustang near $1000.

    Some 2012 Fender highlights...

I really dig the new Johnny Marr Jaguar. I also saw that it has custom BKP's. Johnny has been on the scene for nearly 30 years, so it's cool to see him acknowledged with a sig model.

New Select series is very nice! But pretty expensive also.

Blacktop Tele Baritone is super cool, and very affordable!

I so wish the baritone tele came with a maple neck. I know I'm going to buy one in the next few weeks anyway, but that's the only thing I don't like about it. May have to find a local luthier to make me one if it isn't too expensive!

    Wasn't 80's Fender cool?

No surprise that neither of those lasted more than a year or so.

If it wasn't for 80's Fender, we wouldn't of had this:
