^ And now he has to go back and re-record everything with a Solar because he doesn't actually plan on releasing anything ever again....
Who among home-recording artists in wanna-be status hasn't been guilty of re-re-re-re-re-recording every track they write because, "Oh, man, this new thing is so much better. Can't let anybody hear the old stuff now."

I used to think Jari/Wintersun were the best in the world to the point where my own songwriting started to suffer - the first album was unlike anything I'd ever heard before and I just couldn't get it out of my head to the point I was throwing great ideas aside because they didn't get me in that same ballpark. Naturally the stuff that was left sounded a bit contrived as a result.

I've long since managed to undo the damage that thought pattern did, and as someone who's really strugging to get a "for fun" band off the ground I can't help but feel this sense of bitterness towards him these days. I mean, he had (has?) it all - the record label backing, the locality (metal is very popular in Finland I believe), the fanbase, the skills, the members, no day job etc. and here we are all these years later and very little has happened. There are countless bands that would have taken that platform and ran with it, but instead Jari sits in his apartment apparently writing albums that no-one will ever hear unless the "Wintersun HQ" is built.

Half the band is off doing things with Nightwish (whose commitments will no doubt overshadow that of Wintersun) but yet there he still sits with equipment most musicians would kill to even demo (pretty sure the guy has a set of fucking £10k+ Barefoot monitors in his home setup, and that was years ago).

I "pledged" for the Forest seasons and I think I have maybe one of the tracks in a playlist. Time II I thought was great but, despite being long songs, only having three of them meant they soon became tired. I actually don't know if we'll ever see anything significant from them again, and at this point I don't think I care either.

Shame.

Big difference when you're not expecting the world to finance your time to do it.

You just reminded me of this thread.

The guy using Wintersun as an influence felt like both a copout and completely appropriate at the same time.

True story: I saw Groundhog's Day six times in the theater, and another dozen or more at home. The whole "doing things over and over again without limit until you get it right" part of it really appealed to me. Which seems entirely appropriate given the discussion.

It's one of those where if you saw Caddyshack at just the right age to think Bill Murray's character was the greatest thing you ever saw, you'd love it. Most others would think it was shit. Pretty much Bill Murray at maximum Bill Murray with the sarcasm at 11 the entire time.

I could probably still recite several scenes from it, and haven't seen it in literal decades at this point.

I was bored last night so I started reading this thread from the beginning and all I can say is wow. The folks that were blindly taking his side no matter what evidence was available is just a mind fuck for me.

Wonder how all of his devout fans/followers feel 9 years later

Is it really only 9 years?

I'm probably mature enough to accept that situations change and certain goals among them. You can delay something and do other things instead if it feels right.

I think it's a given and with the million tracks per song he'll have to re-re-re-record, he'll have to re-re-re-record everything else as the guitar sound won't fit with the sounds of the rest of the instruments. Not to mention mixing and mastering. He'll probably need 2 to 3 more PC's and 4 more saunas to make that as glorious as it is in his mind!
