Just put on a new set of NYXL .74-.010 on my 28.625” 8 string... Low F, then Drop B with an extra high tuned half step up... and it snapped!?!? What’s up with that! Do I need a lighter gauge for that half step higher tuning??
    Thanks

Is it tapered at the end? If so did you only put the tapered portion through the tuning peg? If so that could snap the string.

You definitely do not need a lighter string though. I use a .090 on a 28.625” scale tuned to drop G. If i can do that without snapping anything you should have zero problems.

I would try another string. If it it fails again, i would go with StringJoy strings.

I used to get .074’s from them all the time and tune to drop F and i never had a problem.

I bought my 8 string specifically to play Acacia Strain so I’ve definitely been in your shoes lol.

Off topic but what pickups are you using?

EDIT: wait I’m confused, did you snap the lowest string or the next one up?

Oh i see! Same thing happened to me. I ended having to go to a .008 or even a .007 if i remember correctly. That sucker was still on the verge of snapping all the time though. It’ll work but don’t expect to go all bendy shredy with it lol

Just tune the high E a minor second above the C# string for one finger panic noises.

Contact D'addario (e-mail or twitter) and describe your issue. They are pretty good at sending replacement strings (whole set usually) if it is clearly a defect in the string.

As other's suggested, try putting another brand or string on there for the time being to see if it was just a defective string or if something else is going on.

Wait are you trying to tune the high e to f on a 28.625?

This was the main reason I stopped playing on 8s. Ive always played on 7s and 8s as though they add more high strings than low, so I always got into problems like this.

I tune atm to: G#, D#, G#, C#, G#, C# so adding more highs after that high C# is a nightmare. Even 007's snap. It was a nightmare. I tried tuning the high 2 strings to the same note and that didnt really work out well for me as a lead player

But anyways, you're gonna have a hard time tuning a regular string up to F# on an ERG without getting a lighter a string and tuning it up in steps i.e. tune it to E wait a little bit, tune it to F wait a little bit, tune it to F# and never ever bend on it.

    A .010 in F on a 28~” scale guitar? Nuh uh. Go down to .009 or .008.
