For me, even the neck pickup placement of a 24 fret guitar makes the pickup unpleasantly and 'tubby' and 'boomy' sounding, a sound i consider unusable on its own, each pickup should have a tone usable on its own.
I prefer pickups closer to the bridge like on some metal guitars.
I have unconventional and untraditional tastes.

Requiring the neck pickup close to the highest frets messes up the design of the neck joint and messes up high fret access. It pushes the neck joint out under the high frets and weakens the neck joint by removing structural material.

Given a lot of the comments, I've come to the conclusion that I must be incredibly skilled because I can move a finger one fret higher. My day has been brightened.

I rarely use anything above the 12 first frets, so 21, 22 or 24 isn't a big deal for me, but I think I prefer the looks of a neck with 22 frets.

Spirit Carries On has a fucking lick that goes up to the 24 fret that's impossible to play cleanly with a 22 fret bend or a natural harmonic :(
(also, already wrote a few solos that go up to the 24 fret)

the sad part is that visually I prefer 22 fret guitars, seems less cluttered
