Which is closer to Fortin NATAS sound/feel - Thrasher 50 or Satan 50?

    I'd love to get an actual Fortin NATAS, but don't have that kind of money available and prefer something smaller/lower wattage/more affordable. I know that the Thrasher is based on the NATAS with some changes/differences to the circuit design from Randall and cheaper components, and that the Satan is based on the Fortin Satan which in and of itself was a tweaked/modified NATAS, so they're both in the same neighborhood. But if I solely want to get as close as possible to the sound/feel of the NATAS, which is closer - the Thrasher 50, or the Satan 50?

    Haha, yes that is technically true - I was just asking in terms of real amp formats! :)

    You’re probably not going to get many (if any) responses from people that have played all 3. It would be guessing and hearsay to suggest anything. If you want the NATAS sound, then you’d have to save up to get one. If you want a more affordable, and lower wattage amp based on Mike’s design; then grab whichever Randall you prefer the sound clips of. If they are the 2 amps you’re considering, then they should stand on their own merits.

    If you’re asking simply from a preamp circuit design perspective; I found this is an article:

    Randall also asked Fortin to adapt his custom-built NATAS head to a production model that would carry the Randall nameplate. That effort resulted in the 120W all-tube Randall Thrasher head.

    ^ Yep

    Fortin Natas -> Randall Thrasher
    Fortin Meathead -> Randall 667
    Fortin Satan -> Randall Satan

    Mike sold the designs to Randall and adapted them for mass production...

    I get all that, and appreciate the info. I just was curious which was closer in tone/feel considering

    Satan=Randall version of Fortin satan=tweaked/customized version of Fortin NATAS and

    Thrasher=Randall version of NATAS with some tweaks.

    Hopefully it’s making sense what I’m asking, maybe I’m not communicating effectively enough. Just seeing which is closer since they’re both in the same family and closely related.

    The Thrasher is the direct translation of the Natas to a production amp... so what would lead you to believe a different amp would be closer in sound? The Satan has considerable voicing tweaks from the Natas and the frequencies impacted by the HF / LF gain controls were changed (Girth and Grind controls on the Satan).

    I had heard/read that the LF gain on the Thrasher was changed a bit from the NATAS per Randall’s request and that the gain was voiced a little less aggressively, do seeing those things made me think that there were more changes/tweaks between the two than just streamlining it into a production model. :shrug:

    TDIL; my Randall Satan is not a direct model of Fortin Natas

    Could be, but still the closest you're going to get to a Natas without buying one :shrug:

    Thrasher 50 will be the closest to the Natas. Thrasher 120 will probably be even closer tbh.
