    I need to shim the locking nut on my 6 string Ibanez Edge trem guitar. I'm getting fret buzz on the first fret on open notes.

    A Coke can, if you want metal. Or go to the hardware store and get a sheet of brass if you're worried about sustain. You can also buy a little veneer wood and use that. I've seen all of the above used.

    Get a feeler gauge set from sears. You'll get many "shims" in .001 to .002 variances in thickness.
    A pair of tin snips and a drill for the holes and you are in business.

    The set should be 8-10 bucks or so

    You can get little pieces of carbon fiber from hobby stores, they use stuff like that in RC planes and helicopters and stuff.

    I would just make sure it is a rigid material and won't budge.

    If you are lazy like me;
    Guitar Nucleus Guitar Parts - Locking Tremolo Nuts

    edit;
    Great customer service with fast shipping and fast email responses (huge plus IMO).
    Better of course to just wait until you have a good laundry list of items needed before ordering, or shipping will drive your average cost per item way up.

    I've used business cards. even mixed them with Ibanez's metal shims. Work great.

    Stewmac sells brass shims in various sizes. I've always ordered mine from there.
