So Mick Thomson officially joined Jackson guitars in 2017 and unveiled his limited custom shop soloist in a deep blood metallic finish going for $5k. This year at NAMM 2018 we see now he has a usa line and a pro series line of his guitar.

So this year he now has a USA and Pro series line which is something I am very interested in. Sure the USA's are nice, but for the price, I rather pick up two nice used guitars for that price IMO. For the pro series though it is a different story. Sure his soloist looks like a overdone soloist, but if you look at the fine details it is something I don't think they have offered for the pro series ever.

For one it has a reversed headstock which is something I really really like and I know others will too. His guitar has a painted neck, which I know doesn't sound too significant, but in Jackson's catalogue for the Pro series they all have oiled necks which is something I personally don't like so this is great for me. Another thing as well is the blackouts. I know some have tried out the blackouts, but I personally haven't so I am anxious to see how these workout for me. I also like the simple control with only one volume knob and a three switch. Another thing that I really have been lusting for jackson to do is come out with a soloist with a blank ebony board and this checks the box for me. Last, but not least lets talk about his bridge system.

The bridge system is a floyd rose hard tail hybrid. It has the locking principle and feel of a floyd rose, but is mounted on the body like a hard tail (Except for TOM's) and can be detuned without the bridge going out of whach which I think is very nice. I know some will say just put a floyd and install a tremol-no and be done with it, but by doing this you don't have a huge cavity in the back so you get more sustain. The bridge system on the pro series is also used on the USA model so the bridge isn't some cheapo piece of shit Personally I think this is really cool.

So what do you guys think about this guitar? I am going to be buying one once they are in stock on CMC guitars or ZZounds in the black finish. I would like to see him come out with a double rhoads or king v version and have the option to have the Floyd/Hardtail bridge and a floyd rose. I would pay extra for that! For $899 I think what you get is pretty good.

Sounds like he did the same thing with the bridge that he did with his old Ibanez sigs (Edge III Fixed bridge).

Yea that is what I also heard. I am not familiar with his Ibanez line, but did he have a cavity in the back routed out or was the bridge just mounted onto the body like with his jacksons?

I like the reverse headstock. Getting a Mick Thompson sig to me would be an offense as I consider him more of a schtick than a real guitarist, so getting around the reputation on the name might be a bit of a problem. Then for $899 as you mention it might be a cool guitar to have.
Right now I play LTD M-1000 reverse headstock as my main guitar and am quite fond of that. Theirs cost about the same price, so it will come down to which one plays better.

If I had the money, I would personally grab the Metallic Red one. It looks so evil. Such cool guitars!

I think i see where you're coming from with the whole him being a "schtick" thing due to the masks and all that, but you should really check some videos out where he's just playing on his own or teaching some stuff. The dude absolutely rips.

Yeah. I remember listening to one of those Malevolent Creation tracks where he did a lead track. That was cool.

I liked his Ibanez RGs more, but man do I wish it didn't have that huge SEVEN on the fretboard, because I don't care for Slipknot.

I like it a lot. If I was going for a soloist, this would be it. I like the metallic red custom shop finish the best, but I think the black and white ones are cool too, and great at the pro series pricepoint.

Right there with you, that to me reads as CLOWN as soon as you strap that guitar.

I didn't know they were releasing a Pro line I'd seen his interviews and stuff about making the hop to Jackson and always thought these were cool.

I have a really old used reverse headstock Dinky that I more or less learned to play guitar on, I like the feel of the licensed Floyd but it's garbage (knife edges) and the trem is now blocked off with a few coins. I put quite a few mods into it so the electronics no longer work. The fretwork was actually quite good, perhaps work as done from the previous owner but now they're quite worn. A lot of wear and tear for a guitar I got, and treated as such, from more than a decade ago when I was in high school.

As a signature model I could care less but compared to his past models this one looks like just a regular non signature model which is cool. This guitar checks a lot of boxes for me. Especially his side dots which are fret long lines that I've adored since way way way back. Don't see that too often. I won't be buying one new, but I'll definitely be on the lookout for a deal on a used one in a couple years to replace my old Jackson.

I'd love to restore it but that's a project I don't have the time or knowledge for, not to mention that would probably cost more than the guitar, and I'd love to replace it but nothing really caught my eye 'till now.

His ibanez sig looked more brutal, this looks slightly more 80's hair metal imo.
