Whether it be amps, or pedals, or whatnot...

I tend to keep it because I like collecting it AND I like to bust it out once in a while...(even though I never seem to get around to busting it out, I like yo think that I will someday). Hehe

I have 2 pieces of equipment like that - a guitar and a pedal.

The guitar is my first guitar - I'll never sell it. I play it maybe once a year.

The pedal is a Bodenhamer TS7ovChaos. 99% sure you can't buy a new one, and it's one of the only things I bought when I had a 7. I may fire it up again one day, but it's not worth selling to me.

I keep guitars/ gear for a while so that I'm able to try them again later to make sure that they're still not my thing. Then after a few re-try's, if I'm still not jiving with it... off it goes to be sold. Everything that I have, I keep in immaculate condition so that if/ when the day ever comes to sell, I can confidently list as new/ mint.

I just tend to rotate between different rigs as I get bored with one.

I convince myself too frequently that I'll need the old stuff for something later... as at the same time the new stuff itself is under-used.

Depends on the profit. Something I won't get much money for? I'll find a use for it.

Something I don't use a lot and worth a lot of money? Sell it fucker.

Also something taking up too much space.

Same here. I have a few pedals that I'd rather keep and use once in a blue moon than to basically give them away. I also have an old Gibson G-20 solid state amp that my step dad bought for me for $20 over 30 years ago and it's just kind of a cool little thing to have around.

That being said, I have bought and sold a TON of gear over the years and some things I wish I had kept and others I'm glad I got rid of them. As for the gear I have now, it may have taken a few decades but I've finally figured out what I'm actually looking for in terms of gear. I'd have to say that over the last 10 years I've bought a few guitars & a bass and well over 2 dozen pedals and I think that out of all of it, I think I've sold/traded maybe 4 or 5 pedals.

I have a Boss Mega Distortion that can turn two short cables into one useful cable in a pinch.

Where is the option: "Keep it because I'm too lazy to try to sell it"

I picked the first two options. I love collecting gear, and I love having options around for different sounds. This is my only hobby, so I figure I might as well go all-out on it :metal:

I do most of my playing with one combination of pedals/amps/cabs, but sometimes I get the itch to try new combinations and compare stuff. Sometimes a different amp or pedal can spark inspiration; even if I don't write anything new, at least I have fun farting around on a new tone

I occasionally look at them in a big pile and cackle "no one will have these things, no one"

I let my guitars pile up and usually have company at some point that's interested. I either give it to friends and fam or sell it really cheap....or let it pile up

I have a MIM Tele and a Hellraiser C8 that I've posted for sale. Hard to find buyers in the current environment though. I used to be okay with collecting but it's starting to make less sense as I age. Plus years of working in the financial industry has wired me to constantly think about maximising returns off my assets.

This applies to other hobbies too, have recently sold a watch that would make a worthy daily piece, but have decided I'm way too careless to wear a column wheel chronograph frequently.

I find it amusing to buy pedals, then shove them into a closet and then find it years later and be like "cool, I didn't even remember I owned this!"

I mostly keep it just because selling gear is such a gigantic hassle. I make a decent hourly rate working and have a limited amount of free time. Spending hours dealing with online listings, shipping, scammers and flakes just doesn't make sense for me. I'll sell it to a friend if they offer me some cash or I'll just give it away to someone I know who might like it better than me, but otherwise, it's easier to just leave it in a box in a corner.

I need it. Buy it. Store it.

There are closets and cupboards full of cases. Sometime I find a guitar I forgot I owned!!!

I don’t want to sell anything because I know as soon as I do I’ll regret it. Usually I just regret buying it in the first place ;)

I'm constantly buying and selling crap.
The only way I keep gear is if I REALLLLLLLY like it or if I know it'd be an absolute pain to reacquire.
I keep track of which gear I use the most and the least from month to month, and the least used stuff tends to get dumped.

Same here. I tend to have a more modern/american sounding rig, and also a really mid-heavy more british rig. Swapping between the two every few months makes each one feel like a breath of fresh air each time, and makes me appreciate them even more.

When I sell my unused gear, it's because I won't ever use it again. If I'm keeping it, it's because I'm unsure how or when I'll use it again, meaning I still find it useful, although not in current use.
