Hot damn. The Kelly is only one of two "pointy metal guitars" I actually like the aesthetic of, shape-wise (the other being the Xiphos), and I gotta say, this one knocks it out of the park. The shape and the wood really mesh well to form a unified whole, and the visual element of the fanned frets actually works really well with the Kelly shape.

    Oh. Hell. Yes.

I get giddy whenever seeing what guitars Tom is working on and their specs; this is super cool!

    Thanks for the nice comments!

When I was working in Japan in December 2016, I was visiting the guitar shops in Tokyo and it was triggering my GAS hard. I've always been a Marty Friedman fan and his Jackson KE-1 was such a cool guitar, so I thought I could find something similar when I was guitar hunting in Tokyo. After searching for a few days and looking at other guitars, I came to a conclusion that for the price of a second hand rare Jackson or brand new high end guitar, I could just order a total custom job and amortise the cost of the guitar over the wait period. I wasn't in a rush and if I was going to pay a premium, I wanted it to be specs that I wanted.

I chose Waghorn because I wanted someone in the UK, so that I could communicate with them easily in the same time zone and I wouldn't have to worry about shipping overseas / taxes / etc. There were also a few chances for me to hop down to Bristol but unfortunately I never made it. My previous experience with .strandberg* was fine, but I didn't communicate that much with Ola and I didn't go crazy with the Boden spec as I didn't know exactly what I wanted, other than a .strandberg*. After digging around, Waghorn seemed to be a well established builder with great results and returning customers, and his work looked fantastic. After some email back and forth, I was in the wait queue in December 2016, and the build started around 2018 some time.

    Specific design choices:
    • I wanted a Kelly because of Marty Friedman.
    • I wanted a single pickup. I don't use the neck pickup much on my .strandberg*. I do play in a grind / metal band, so if I did another genre, I could always flip back to my .strandberg*. For my main band (GENDO IKARI), I wanted it to be simple.
    • I don't use the tone knob. So just a volume pot.
    • I am a huge fan of Kevin Hufnagel (Dysrhythmia / Gorguts / Sabbath Assembly / Vaura), and his Strat tone on 'Psychic Maps' is mind blowing. Heavy, raw and technical playing on a single coil is unique. The pickup has a coil split so I can sort of attempt this.
    • I have a Neutrik jack installed as I like them on my Dingwalls (standard).
    • I don't mind the fanning on the .strandberg* (25.5" to 27") but I wanted it to be a bit more "normal".
    • Being spoilt rotten by the lightness of the .strandberg*, I asked specifically for a light body. Tom did justice here by using South American Mahogany.
    • Seeing as burl tops were rage, and having never owned one myself, I figured the Kelly might be a good platform to try it out. Tom did a banging job on this! The black gives the burl a smoke effect and life, with the purple burst being quite subtle. It's not as audacious as say, some Kiesels, but I am happy with this.
    • Originally we were going to go with ETS hardware, but they closed shop recently due to personal reasons, so we went with ABM. They seem great.
    • For some reason, I can't remember the specific woods chosen for the neck, but I believe it's a 5 piece neck with Wenge as the main wood, with Purple Heart and maybe Rosewood. I have a Wenge neck on my green Dingwall, and I love it. I don't regret getting a rosewood neck for my .strandberg*, but Wenge feels more slick.
    • I specifically went for Sharkfin inlays (because it's Jackson style and cool), but the amount of times I have to show my riffs on my .strandberg* (which has a Pale Moon Ebony fretboard, unmarked) to band mates and they can't tell which fret I'm playing because there are no fret markers was pretty annoying for both of us. Sharkfins should make it easier.
    • Input jack tucked away at the back to keep the sides clean.
    • Reverse headstock for a bad ass look.
I've not played it as much as I would like, but so far I am a huge fan of this guitar, it sounds massive and it looks fantastic. Tom is a great luthier and I would recommend him to anyone.

I saw your guitar in the shop when I visited Waghorn a few weeks ago. It's even more lovely in the flesh.

Not going to derail this much but I'm surprised you'd not get the major distinctions here:
    1) Jackson wouldn't build with these specs..
    2) This doesn't use the Jackson headstock.
    3) Jackson is not a small builder.

So on the contrary, this is probably my favorite build of 2019 so far.

What a sick axe; awesome example of how great a good burl top can be, I really like the "binding" on the bevel too. Loving the riffs and the SNK VHD as well - you've got a new fan.
