Wonder what this’ll sound like!
We might get an 8 string Universe before we get an 8 string JP.
He says he’s got 4 albums in the works, the 8 string stuff has the most potential imo but I wouldn’t want a whole album with just the idea of clean, dirty or 8 string. Taking the best of all and making one stellar album would a better choice.
thanks for linking this. I wasn’t sure if the rules otherwise I would have.
I agree though, just make one killer album using all the tools at your disposal.
That....is very interesting.
I recall someone asking him about 8s a while back and he gave a kind of lukewarm response that sounded like he was mostly just trying to be polite, so this is pretty neat to see. Definitely excited to see what he pulls out from it.
I'd be interested in hearing what he does with it. I tend to only be interested in 8 strings if they're used for weird shit, and Vai's a master of being weird... tastefully weird, but weird.
If it happens and Ibby makes him an 8 and finds a way to keep it sub $3k I'd be interested. But knowing his sigs it'll be $5k+
As a devout Vai fanboy, I learned a long time ago not to get too hopeful about his future plans. He's been talking about doing another ALS-style album for years now and that's yet to happen.
I get it, though. I walk in my studio some days with one intention and walk out hours later with an entirely new song. Hell, I've dumped like 10 songs off this solo album I've been working on for 4 years just because I've greatly changed my writing in that time. The first batch of songs I wrote were fairly basic, intro/verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge/chorus stuff and then around last year I started writing a lot more abstract songs without any kind of regular structure, which is MUCH more up my alley of what I listen to and what my original goal was.
I'd be willing to bet he puts out an album that's a mixture of the 3 he was discussing in the GW article.
This sounds interesting! An 8 string Universe would be awesome too..an Octaverse?
Be awesome to hear him do something
He really needs to leave the album format behind. It would be great to get individual songs and EPs from time to time.
I don't disagree, it'd certainly lend itself to his musical ADD better than an album format. He'd probably get a little extra bank from doing so as well. I assume people are more likely to buy a $0.99 song every couple months instead of spending $10 on an album in one shot.
That said, I still really love albums. I'm not sure that'd work for every band/artist. I know I hate to listen to new Tool or Mastodon stuff one song at a time, spread out by months. I like throwing on an album and sitting in that zone for the duration of it.
Add me to the camp thats surprised we're getting an 8 string Vai song before an 8 string Petrucci song.
Also, wonder if he got the idea of dividing up multiple albums from Devin Townsend doing the original DTP albums. I mean, he did show up on Empath last year, and most of us probably know their history.
Don't get me wrong, I love LPs too. I just think Vai specifically would benefit, pretty much for the reasons you listed.
Would be cool to hear him playing some 8-string. Even some 7 would be nice too.
Did he stop writing 7 string songs? I really haven't listened to much new Vai material in recent years.
His last album had 3 songs using a 7. But that said. The Story Of Light was released 8 years ago.
Didn't he at one point already have an LACS RG8? The one that he didn't end up using for some reason and it ended up in Munky's hands? I believe it was used on the "see you on the other side" record. Anyhow, going lower isn't exactly a new thing for Vai so I'm curious to hear heavier stuff from him again
He currently has two 8s (a LACS and an off the shelf RGIR28FE) and had access to at least two (one red, one blue) more prototypes of what became the RG2228, one of which Munky owned/owns.
Fingers crossed Ibanez release an 8 string with a lo pro
