So there are so many inexpensive 6-in-line tuners out there but no LH ones, making it hard to do a budget build with a reverse headstock.

But maybe my thinking is flawed. I heard a long time ago that the string must be wound the right way around the tuner or it will put pressure the wrong way on the screw and the mechanism won't engage as well.

But now that I think about it... That doesn't really make a ton of sense for a machine with no play in the gears.

Does anyone know if there's a good reason not to put RH tuners on a LH headstock?

you may have some problems with getting the gear housings to fit with enough space... like your low e gear might be pushing close to the edge of the headstock and look a little wonky. But other than that it's not like it's gonna explode into a million pieces or something if you wind it backwards. May cause it to wear oddly and loosen over time... but we're talking decades.

StewMac has these ^^^ that I've used a bunch, fairly cheap to get some in left or right, sold individually. All things considered I know exactly how you feel for being on a "budget build"... but as they say, anything worth doing is worth doing right.

I don't know about cheap tuners, but I put Schaller right handed 6 in a line tuners on a reverse headstock about 30 years ago and have never had any issue with them.

It might be ok, but some tuners may be designed for the force on the worm gear to be in a particular direction, it makes commercial sense to optimise for one direction as a way to reduce costs.

    1) Go to guitar fetish.

    2) Buy inexpensive LH tuners.

    3) Stop saying there's no inexpensive LH tuners

    GFS only has RH.

The Thomman link looks good for European folks. I'll have to see how much shipping them to the states costs. What I really want is someone like kmise, musiclily, or GFS to make them. But alas :)

I've worked on LH guitars that have had RH tuners installed for decades, so I don't think it'll hurt the mechanism, at least that much.

Awesome. Guess my next non-headless build will have a reverse headstock then!

It won't do anything. The inside parts are exactly the same, just the case that's reversed.

A lot of tuners can be reversed without too much trouble. Especially the open gear ones.

The Vanson stuff on eBay seems pretty good. I have a few from them, you can also message them and specify exactly what combination of left/right tuners you want. Reasonably priced too.
