Man, Im a huge Azagthoth fan.
He's the main reason I still listen to Morbid and very few death metal classic bands that I try to incorporate into
    progressive rock, blues and metal.

After listening to Domination for the 8000th time since '95 (the day it came out),
Im very inspired by Eric Rutan's melodic leads. It's hard to say who's better but I think I like Rutan's leads a little more.

The thing is, when I saw Morbid Angel back in '94, it was just Trey. I would of loved to seen Rutan.
    What are your thoughs?

    I love Domination, especially Hatework.
I read somewhere they consider it their worst album, and Hatework their worst song.

Erik Rutan is really cool. You should check out his Band "Hate Eternal" He does all the guitar work on those CDs... Along with another more melodic band called "Alas".

    Wow! Cool, HB.
I'll definately have to check his band out.
I've heard of his band but never heard any songs.
I love his solo in Eyes To See, Ears To Hear.
I think Domination is Morbid Angel's best. It's tough to decide which is their best but that album was very and still to this day influental to me.

Yeah, it'll be nice to see Dave back in action. Before I say this, I will let you know that I've been a LONG time MA fan...since Alters of Madness came out!

MA has always had some great riffage, but I've never been a fan of Trey's soloing. He claims to be influenced by Mozart & EVH, but I haven't heard a lick of that. His solos are less than spectacular. It's mostly out of key wankery drenched in reverb & the occasional Eventide-produced minor 3rd harmony.

<ducks and covers for the impending assualt>

I can hear the EVH in it, he does tap like crazy. i dont hear the mozart. Maybe its a philosophical thing or something.

Its just unorthodox. I can hear the influences. It's a little sloppy. That is why I like Eric Rutan.
    But still, Trey shreds.
Some of his solos are great but then some are terrible but I appreciate them.
Seeing him play live of course changed the way I thought of him musically.
He can pull off techniques well.

Does unorthodox = sloppy? I just fail to see how someone can be considered a shredder when they obviously don't solo in key or have less-than-stellar techniques. Sloppy is sloppy. Jimmy Page is one of the most sloppy players around and he's not considered a shredder.

Sorry, I'm in the mood to play devil's advocate.

But he is considered one of the best guitar players of all time, along w/ Hendrix and such. Doesnt mean he is. (Personally, im not a huge fan of either jimmy or jimi, even though both have a few cool songs. Props To Page for owning Crowley's castle.)

True, but if you were in one of the most top-selling bands in the world, you'd tend to get a title like that. Like you said, doesn't mean he is.

    Anyway, back on topic.

Yeah, I never quite got the "lava" reference thing.

After hearing those solo tracks, if left me doing this  and saying things like "Uhhhhh, ok." & "Uhhhh, really? Have fun with that!" ;)

Sloppy in a good way and also in seeing your point.
Shredder as in fast riffage and wailing as he did live when I saw him 11 years ago.
Let's put it this way. He doesn't suck.
I've always thought he was more of a Jake E. Lee type of player but of course he's more EVH.
He uses the whammy bar excessively and I think it may sound sloppy at times (Vernon Reid who is also good).
But the guy can play and write great songs with alot of dynamics.
He is not the best guitarist out there but has always been one of my favorites.
I find Eric Rutan has a better sense of melody though.

Sloppy lead playing or not, MA's rhythms are f'ing sick in some places. Trey is the man!

Having seen them on the Domination tour, and since I have a VCD video of one of the other shows from that same tour, I just prefer Trey. He and Pete define Morbid Angel, IMO. :hbang:
