Yeah, if there's a subscription fee involved I feel like you have to play it ALL THE TIME or else it's a waste of your money. I'd definitely play that game if there weren't monthly fees cause it's the kind of thing where I just want to chill out and do some leveling quests for an hour or two every week or so and eventually have a maxed out character and MAYBE check out some endgame instances or raids but probably not. But 15 a month for that little playtime? GTFO.

yeah that's how i feel too. I don't want to feel pressure to play a game i bought lol. I just want to play it when I want to play it. 💆‍♂️

the story does seem pretty good once it gets going in this youtube playthrough i've been following. apparently it's supposed to get waaay better with the expansions.

i could see that 2.5 seconds really annoying me with as little patience as I have lol.

You're all aware that you can play FF14 for free through all of A Realm Reborn and Heavensward.. right?

The story of A Realm Reborn is fantastic and Heavensward is even better. Stormblood is easily the worst story and Shadowbringers is Meh. I haven't played through Endwalker yet, but I log on for a bit of MSQ every now and again. Either way, playing the two best stories in the game for free is worth the time.

I haven't played through Endwalker yet, but I log on for a bit of MSQ every now and again. Either way, playing the two best stories in the game for free is worth the time.

I bought the newest expansion. I don't have a subscription anymore. So I think the situation is that I'm not eligible for a "free trial" unless I wipe out my install, make an account without a record of having paid for the newer expansions, and play as a class I wasn't interested in (I wanted to try out Dancer - back in my paying days I leveled just about every available Heavensward class up a ways). I would think best case scenario would be I'd be allowed to play it F2P up until level 60 as one of the non-expansion classes.

You can create a second service account through MogStation and leave it on Trial to play for free. Though, I think you're right in that you would only be limited to play what's available in ARR and Heavensward. Anything Stormblood and beyond, you'd need to be paying the sub.
