They told me my ASVAB scores automatically qualify me for being part of their Nuclear Program, with 2 years of school, and walk out with a Bachelor's in Nuclear Science... I know I said I wouldn't do military BUT SWEET POTATO FRENCH FRIES THIS IS WORTH THINKING ABOUT

Do it. Just remember to really grill your recruiter on the details, I'm not saying that they lie, just that they can sugarcoat from time to time. That being said, I know a few guys who came out of the Navy with degrees, all of them smart and successful.

    The Navy Called... Me too

They said the current waiting time for UK Naval jobs is 3 years....

Even though I passed initial examination which means I could apply as anything from an able rating to an Officer. :/

I wonder if I could get a job in the US military?

Go to the Embassy and ask. It's possible, but a long process.

    Garrett:

Recruiters lie. Trust me, I know. My dad knows, my niece knows, my brother knows, and soon enough one of my nephews will know.

Not saying you can't get into the Nuke program (and if you can, ABSOLUTELY do it, I'm trying to get my nephew to go that route, since he's going Navy), but it is one of the most challenging academic programs the Military offers, rivaling Special Forces Medic, and Explosive Ordnance Disposal.

If you want, send me a message on Facebook, and I'll get you in contact with a former Sailor I know that was balls deep in the Navy Nuke program. He knows his shit through and through, and is one of the sources I hounded for information on the Japan crisis.

Is nuclear science what you want? Or is a shorter stay in school what you want? Shorter =/= better always... :yesway:

As short as 2 years is... A second 2 is just as short especially if you're getting what you really want. :agreed:

I'd deffo talk to some more nukes about it (yes, we just call them nukes). It isn't that uncommon to score well enough on the ASVAB to qualify for the nuke program, but believe me, qualifying with the ASVAB might not be the best indicator. I more than qualified, but I promise you my math and science skills aren't what they'd need to be to make it through the nuke program. Luckily they were pushing for intel/linguist at the time and that's what I wanted when I walked in the door, so they didn't try to push the whole nuke thing on me.

Incidentally, in the Navy when someone is overthinking a simple problem, wel call it "nuking it out," haha. The handful of people in my division in boot camp who were going nuke were all really smart, but DAMN were they ever lacking in common sense.

At any rate, if you can actually get a bachelor's out of it these days, that'd be pretty hard to pass up, especially knowing that if you get out after your first enlistment you could use the GI Bill to get your Masters (maybe even the better part your doctorate, if you work your ass off).

EDIT TO ADD: Plus I assume you'll get a security clearance (not sure what level) out of the deal, and believe me, that opens some career opportunity doors that wouldn't have been available otherwise. Protip: find reputable references now, lol. Security background checks are thorough. If you've done ANYTHING you don't think you'd be able to pass a lie-detector about, then just fess up to it from the get-go. Shouldn't be a problem if you aren't some kind of miscreant, but... heads up.

Helpful hint: When searching for funny pictures of "Gay sailors" to post, for God's sake, turn safe search on.

I dated a girl who's father is Disciplinary Manager in the Navy. He's made enough grown men cry (in a straight way) and he watched one grown man piss his pants. He was so fucking friendly (to me). I talked to him more, probably. Hardcore sports fan. I loved his certifications. "MS STEPHEN O'QUINN."

Me: Why the fuck does it say Miss?
Girlfriend: I think it stands for "Master Semen".
    Me: LOL.

While it is true some recruiters try to sell you dreams, you can get the real information that you need to make a good decision. I was in the United States Navy on active duty for 10 years, and I am a Reservist now. If you have any questions, feel free to PM.

SS.org: Where armed forces servicemen and armchair philosophers come together to talk about Axe-FX.

Seriously though, sounds fantastic. I hope you can get your foot in the door.

Incidentally, what is an ASVAB? Don't think we have that in Canada.

Good luck! Maybe you'll run into a few of my friends who are involved with the Nuclear Officer program. I'm applying to Navy OCS, so perhaps we'll serve together one day!

You better look into what Nuclear Program actually means. Sounds cool but you might be stuck doing some shitty job no one wants to do and they are filling the spots.

I know a guy who went CBRN (Chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear) Specialist in the Corps and they told him some crap that he would be doing some cool shit but you know what he ended up doing? Handing out gas masks to us Grunts every week

Sounds like some sick stuff! If it is what you want then go for it! I am planning on going USAF TACP in a few months. Lots of cool stuff. One of my friend's grandpa's was a Nuclear Physicist for the military. He helped design some of the most innovative fighter planes and a whole bunch of other stuff he can't tell anyone. When you get up there you definitely have the chance to see and do some serious shit. Go for it!
