Logic as simple as that is what leads a person to pick up a trumpet over a cello or whatever else and no one berates them for it...

Yet somehow guitar players feel they can tell each other what they do and don't need. I see the same thing n sax forums though where ppl will tell other folks what saxophone features they do and don't need.

The fact of the matter is... If it's available and you've become accustomed to using it, you've developed *some* need for it regardless of how others perceive you/your instrument.

Does Scott Fernandez not need 12 strings on his bass?

According to your thread title the only thing Im getting angry about is that I have to read threads like this on this forum. You like 9 strings, he doesnt. Remind me again why this entire forum should give a shit about this meaningless issue that someone had on their personal facebook page? The guy said nothing wrong. You engaged him after he baited you. End of story, move on and focus on shit that actually matters.

The guy just has an opinion, he's a little "in your face" with it, but it's still just his opinion. No need to call him "the douche heard heard around the world"

This would be fine, if you actually put him in his place - I'm unconvinced.

He's stating an opinion. I don't agree with it necessarily and he is obviously trolling at the same time, but it's still valid.

He's free to think whatever about it untlil the American Republican Party figures out how to legislate thought.

The parallels he draws between adding strings to a guitar and other things in the world seem a bit farfetched, though.

But I just re-read his comments and found something that should have stopped all this before it started...

"I see you're into guitar jack-offery as a guitar player. I'm not as a fan."

He doesn't even play guitar. If he heard someone playing a 95 string guitar would he even fucking know?

To me this is like the fat fuck eating a corndog on his couch watching the Olympics stating that a runner's shoes were dumb because he didn't like the placement of the air bubbles. I'm pretty sure most folks would immediately write it off as silly. :2c:

    • Unless you tune in all Major 3rds
    • Unless you like to play across the neck more than up & down
    • Unless you really like open strings in your chords and you want more options
    • Unless you want to play micro-tonal music without refretting your guitar
    • Unless you really like dense chords, so you need 9strings to cover the range lost by having strings with really close intervals
    • Unless you use re-entrant tunings
That's with 30 secs of brainstorming. I'm sure there's more valid reasons for wanting a 9-string.
You make your comment, and then you immediately contradict yourself. Add to that your "solution" is to tell somebody to buy an additional special-purpose instrument instead of one that could do double-duty? :squint:

Looks like you guys just disagree. It happens in life, usually with all things subjective.

With that said, I think the 9 string like that is a bit of an extravagance because you can no longer maintain the octave relationship between a guitar and bass which is a staple in rock and metal (and since this was made for Tmac, I assume he will face this issue when writing on it).

Anything below an F# on bass (the octave below the guitar) is inaudible to humans. If you go down to C#, even the harmonics will be hard to hear, but you will not be hearing a fundamental. Personally, that is the dealbreaker right there for me.
So that means after a certain point, the bass will have to join the guitar's octave (meshuggah style) and actually lose low end, and the usual role of the bass in the music when it drops.

Just my $.02 on the matter

You can also add a high string ;)
