The last of us...

So when I played the game, I was sort of enjoying it until the hospital scene in the end.

I understand why Joel did whatever he did. I just hated it as it rubbed in that I wasted 40 hours playing the game and then Joel undid all my hardwork and doomed humanity.

I haven't played the second game yet, so not sure if the second season would showcase anything from the second season.

I actually didnt mind the show, but I did think that the relationship between Joel and Ellie was supposed to be more established than it did in the show. Yes, we get he's protective of her, but it wasnt as deeply engrained as that in the game.

Thus pacing could have been better

Started some new shows:
Bridgerton: What a shitty nighttime soap opera about "ladies" before women's rights would be if it were written by twelve year old girls. Absolute dogshit drama. DNW, but the wife seems to enjoy it.

Altered Carbon: This one I dig. Lots of mind-fuckery trying to get a grip on the concepts early on, but once you get what's happening I love the intrigue between humans, AI's trying to live with humans, and the humans so rich they clone themselves so they never have to die. I like to think this and Upload are from the same universe, this just being a little further into the process. It gives me lots of ideas about what will happen when we reach the point where we can be uploaded as a concious entity. The idea that the ultra-wealthy will turn to complete debauchery, without even masking it, while the rest of us fight for the scraps is pretty common, but I still loved the married couple that fight to the death to entertain the assholes and their payment for their fights is upgrades. Very cool show so far. I hope they don't botch it at some point.

Shadow & Bone: Second season picks up where season one left off. No real answers, and the characters are hard to root for sometimes, but still better than some attempts at fantasy lately. Kinda meh on it. Hopefully they do something cool with this season.

My wife watched this, and I understand it's basically only a step or two below Victorian porn, geared for women, which I think was a big part of its appeal. From what little I saw, it reminded me a lot of a, um, period piece version of Gossip Girl, I think that show was called? I pretty clearly wasn't the audience.

We are VERY slowly working our way through The Golden Compass, and probably due to start both Mando s3 and the new Ted Lasso season, except I think neither of us has bought an apple device in a while so our subscription there has lapsed. I told my wife she's up for a phone since hers is a generation behind mine.

My wife's only complaint about Bridgerton is the almost complete lack of sexuality. "Where is all the sex everybody says this show is full of?" was actually asked by her at the end of the last episode we watched, where the main girl loses her virginity to the duke. That was probably the most chaste sex scene I've ever witnessed.

I'm surprised my wife hasn't forced us into Gossip Girl yet. She tried to get me to watch Sex & The City, but I gave her my "You refuse Beavis & Butthead, this is my line in the sand." She hasn't tried again.

Bridgerton is definitely pretty tame in terms of sex/sexiness. I was forced to sit through both seasons and found it mildly entertaining at best. It's just a half assed pride and prejudice ripoff for people that like their period pieces anachronistic as fuck.

If your wife wants 1700s/1800s shows/movies with actually good sex scenes (and are actually good) : Harlots, Dangerous Liaisons (either the recently canceled showtime version or the Glenn Close movie), Outlander and The Libertine are great options.

Gossip Girl (the CW version) was actually super fun and snarky overall. It also had a really great soundtrack.
The HBO version was so boring I couldn't even finish the first season.
You would honestly be better off watching Sex and the City. Sex and the City is genuinely a great show, and has a ton of funny stuff in it.

Harlots was great when it was running. They went a little weird with the last season or so, but what a great premise to run with.

Sex & The City won't ever fly for me. I can't get over my hate of Sarah Jessica Parker. It's probably not rational, but I'm old enough to be allowed my "eccentricities."

I've watched quite a few episodes when my partner did a rewatch and I found the writing was good, got some laughs out of me, but fucking hell is SJP's character annoying as shit.

In other news: The White Lotus. We binged the first season over the weekend and loved it. Great original score, hilarious characters that are almost all awful people in their own way, and just lots of fun. Started season 2 last night and also enjoying it after the first episode.

Not by choice, my girlfriend watches it when I'm doing other thing, but I catch bits as I walk past. Goddamn, is that show annoying. I'm sure someone's done it, but I hope someone's done a supercut video of the antagonist's awkward silences after being told or asked something, while his inner monologue/narration is "speaking".

If that narrative device doesn't remind one of Dexter, the stupid, stupid contrivances all over the show will. My thoughts & prayers go out to your household.

Both seasons of White Lotus are just excellent viewing. Like you say, horrible people, but hugely entertaining.

Altered Carbon is really good. I recently rewatched it and it was just as good as the first time around. The anime short sucks a lot though, don't waste your time.

That show is so gross dude. I hate everything about it. I can't escape the feeling that they consistently manage to portray Gossip Girl as the hero while giving the appearance of condemning him for being a bad, bad boy. At the very best, it sensationalizes extreme psychological violence. My ex wife was totally hooked and we discussed this aspect a lot. Didn't stop her watching it though.

Also she started this show right on the tail end of a Gossip Girl binge, which was a supreme mindfuck because in a lot of ways he's the same character.

"Gross" is the best way to put it. I swear they go easy on the guy as a hedge because they think that some viewers might earnestly be turned on by it. So strange.

Started up Interview with the Vampire series, and the first episode is a hell of an intro to the series. I read all the books ages ago and they definitely changed a lot of details, but contextually they make for way better tv.

I hated those two. Everyone's awful, no one learns anything, no one grows, and all the rich people avoid all consequences from their actions. If I wanted to watch reality TV, well, I wouldn't.

It's a fine line for me. Like, for instance, I absolutely refused to keep going on Succession because there was ZERO entertainment value. It was just abysmal people doing abysmal things over and over to each other. Somehow, White Lotus took the same premise and made it, well, I don't want to say funny, but on some level it tickles a part of my brain where these awful people at least get a little of their shit shoved back in their faces.

The best part was the post-show interviews with the creators. Sometimes those can break a show for me, but I absolutely loved the self-awareness of these people. Saying of a character death, "Having her die in this really derpy way," which was pretty accurate and tied up the continuity between seasons with a nice little bow.

And honestly, anybody that didn't crack the hell up at the, "So, what's it like to be gay" conversation has no soul.

Hey, some of the characters were great - the hotel manager in season 1 was awesome. You just couldn't root for anyone.

The only one who goes on any sort of personal growth journey in that season is the kid, who runs off to join the rowers from the airport... and you KNOW that story only looks like a happy ending as he's out rowing in the sunrise at the end, and nothing good is going to come of it.

Yeah, I managed to go through S1 of White Lotus and found the only thing I enjoyed was the hotel manager's story and that steered into the skid of full on nutty whereas everyone else was just shitty. Sydney's great in Euphoria as Cassie, but in this she was just made out to be insufferable and entitled, which I get was the point but like, UGH.

Coincidentally, I also started Succession like a week ago, and I see all the same things but with even less likeability - probably just because it's too close to real life, like how people kept saying Don't Look Up wasn't as much a satire today as it would've been 10 yrs ago - so I stopped watching by episode four.

I've been watching the new episodes of Party Down. Though I'm often disappointed with shows that come back after a long break (*cough, cough* Arrested Development), as they often seemed to have lost some of the flow they had going for them, I've been very entertained by the new season, especially the mushrooms episode, lol!

Speaking of White Lotus...

Seeing it now, it's like, duh...but I have no idea how I missed that these two are the same actor.
