I don't find Derek Trucks cringy at all. I do enjoy his guitar playing.
Whereas Joe Bonamassa, love his songwriting as well as his guitar playing, and tone with his Les Pauls. Not a fan of his vox too much. Maybe it's acquired taste like Vai's or Labrie's.

I had a similar search some years ago. What I did find out was that all those guitar players who were recommended to me as sounding similar to SRV were pretty much poor man's versions of him - those have been listed here already a few times. Nobody can recreate the magic SRV had, the copycats just make me cringe.
I found out that best way to find similar style of guitar playing and good music was to go backwards and listen to Stevie's influences, mainly Albert King and Albert Collins. They really have the same vibe going on.
By the way, as a result of my research, I became a massive John Mayer fan. His playing isn't 1:1 to SRV but the influences are there. But, he's got a great song writing skills and I think he has very nice approach on guitar playing in general.
