So, I got a bunch of nice templates from G&W, including these: https://guitarsandwoods.com/templates/acrylic-generic-backplates-templates-set-round.html

However, they are only 5mm thick, which creates an issue I didn't foresee. I can't, for the life of me, figure out how to route the cavity lip. The shortest pattern bit I have is 1/4" that I got this week for routing pickup cavities. But this only needs to be as deep as the thickness of whatever control cavity plastic I get (3mm?). So, need some help how to solve this. Thanks!

Attach your template to an MDF spacer piece with some double sided tape. Route the shape into he MDF first, then position it on the body, route down into the body with MDF and template on top, just cut to the thickness of your cover plate material using the tip of the router bit. I've been able to do this with 1/2" bits too...
