"There are no mistakes, only happy accidents." -Bob Ross

When I was a teenager, one of my favorite bands was a Norwegian group called Arcturus. They went through a lot of stylistic and personnel changes over the years, so when they released their album Sideshow Symphonies, I had no idea at all what it was going to sound like. Starts off pretty cool, very Arcturus... I'm about 50 seconds in... BELCH

The dude fuckin' belches. Like, what? I don't get it. It drove me crazy at the time. Why would they do that? Maybe they ran out of money in the studio and the deadline came. Personally, I think it was something that happened on accident, or by chance, and they just decided somehow artistically that they preferred to keep it. They were doing the vocal take that ended up being the "keeper" for that beginning and he did a mean fuckin' belch because it was before he comes in and he planned to cut it later. But as you can hear, no such cutting occured

    ----------

Unlike that Arcturus one, this one is actually cool, so I understand why they kept it. Or maybe this one wasn't an accident? If it was on purpose, I really don't understand what happened. But in the song Shemaforash by Behemoth around 45 seconds he does this goofy Tenacious D style inward singing

Listening to Evangelion for the first time in a while inspired this thread (but I do remember thinking this even the first time I heard the song), so those two are actually all I've got up my sleeve, but I know there's gotta be some more that you guys know. Let me hear'em!

3 of the most famous of all time are:

    1. The Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards clicking on the very loud footswitch button to turn on the Maestro FZ1 Fuzz right before playing the intro riff to Satisfaction in 1965. It was supposed to be a demo but they ended up keeping the take.
    2. EVH's "incorrect" (out of key) note on Eruption.
    3. Many of Hendrix's takes, because he would record hundreds and use the best one. But they were all individual takes with their own magic and flubs. Hence all the glorious studio outtakes.

IIRC Far Beyond the Sun has a single mistake midway through the solo. Yngwie was big on just doing one take so it stayed.

Shitty half-assed pinch harmonics is one I always notice, but as of this exact second I can't think of an example. Next time I come across one I will return to the thread.

But remember, friends don't let friends commit strangled, choked or otherwise inadequate pinch harmonics to final masters.

edit. More on topic, in the second verse of Mailman, Chris Cornell sings "pflace" instead of "place".

Not metal, but in Roxanne by The Police, Sting sitting on the piano and then laughing.

Also Synchronicity II, the “guitar solo” is just noise that the guitarist didn’t know was being recorded.

The cover of Paranoid by Megadeth has Nick Menza continuing to play after the song is over and Dave yelling “Nick! Nick! NICK!” And Nick saying “Fuck. Me. Running.”

Also there’s a song on Led Zep II that has the studio’s phone ringing. Can’t remember which song though.

SOAD / Serj Tankian songs have a lot of quiet phrases or noises in them, though these probably aren't 'accidents'. Two examples I could remember off the top of my head:

CD version of 'Chop Suey!' has 'We're rolling Suicide' phrase in the intro. Can't find this version on youtube.

'Ching Chime' has a strange reversed(?) sound around 3:55 panned hard to the right channel. Not sure what's up with that.

I feel like that’s a pop filter but yeah, I hear “P’s” become “F’s” all the time.
