Stripped Strandberg Boden Metal

I just bought a used Boden Metal 8. I super don't care for the white pearl finish. The current plan is to strip it and potentially make a nice flamed or quilted maple top for it. The site says it's basswood with a 1/4" maple top. Has anyone seen the quality of the wood under the paint? I know it's not gonna be some nice figured piece. I won't be home for a few months or I'd just go ahead and see what's underneath.

Possibly ulgy basswood and plain maple.

Yeah prob plain maple top.
you could do a quilt or flamed veneer over the top of it. That would be way easier than trying to slap a new thicker top on the guitar or retrofitting one.

I emailed Strandberg about it. Waiting on a response. I guess I'm mostly worried if it's pieced together with mismatched colored pieces or covered in filler. If it's just super plain maple with nothing interesting going on I might do a quilted maple veneer.

I just got the reply. To sum it up, a maple cap and a two or three piece basswood body. I guess I'll find out when I'm home. I'll make sure to toss up some photos.

I'm definitely watching this, as I've considered buying a Boden Metal 8 and doing the exact same thing.

This got put on the back burner for a bit. I made 5 attempts and each time the same spots wouldn't take the dye properly. So instead of having something 98% good, I'm going with gloss black. I should be able to spray the clear this weekend.

Too bad, that dyed wood on the upper horn looked fantastic. Maybe they just used too much grain filler in those spots. All black should look sharp, though.
