Would a sovtek MIG 60 work well for those three genres in the title? Post metal and Doom are the most important ones (I have an amp that can do grind awesomely already).

for doom practicly any old mid gain amp is great you just need to crank em as fuck if you want the sludgy doomy sound

I'm not really financially set enough right now for a $400-500 "try". I was wondering if anyone who had one or has played one before could tell me their experience. I think the one I wanted just sold though.

Grind is at the oppoite end of the tonal spectrum than doom and post-metal, but the Sovtek MIG100 is a good amp, so I would assume the MIG 60 to be quality.

It is never wise to purchase something you haven't heard with your own ears. Other peoples opinions dont really count for a lot because everybodies definition of tone is unique, so basing your choice off that alone is ignorant, and you'd just be setting yourself up for potential disappointment.

While I understand and agree with what you're saying, there's really no opportunity for me to try this amp. They're not so common that I've been able to find one and play it. I've heard that the Sovtek's are pretty decent amps and I found one for a price I was willing to spend. Just wanted peoples opinions (or clips) to help me make a decision.

Sunns are very expensive now because they're sought after for doom, along with Ampeg V4s and V4Bs.

I've played a MIG 100 and was pretty impressed. The thing had transformers from hell and was very loud.

A lot of the "doom" tones I've heard have basically been mid-gain amps cranked way the fuck up, and the MIG 60 should be able to do that since it's not a high gain amp really, closer to a JCM800. And at 60W it will be slightly more bearable at full tilt (only slightly though!)

Then flip a coin to decide whether to purchase it or not, that's basically all you're doing, you have 50/50 chance of it sounding how you want. But to each their own dude, the power of choice is the only absolute thing we all have.

I actually just ordered a Sunn head. And depending on how this one sounds I have leads on a few others that I could pick up.
EDIT: And it was $200 cheaper than the MIG 60 I was looking at. :D

For grindcore you'd have to boost a Sunn HARD, remember Sunns were used as Bass amps back in the day.

    This!

And I'm assuming that you'd just use dirt pedals for your tones, right? A Sunn or Sovtek won't get you razor-sharp grindy tones without using a pedal. I have a Sunn Beta Bass that I use on one of my rigs, and it takes pedals very nicely.

Yeah, I am planning on boosting it. I just have a Boss Dyna Drive for now, but I am going to get better pedals at some point. Also I guess I'll try and use this for drone/doom/postmetal as the Crate covers grind pretty damn well.
^See 'bove. Also, in the liner notes for Terifyer, it says that Scott Hull used Randall and Sunn amps on the album.

Could be the Randall, but all the tracks on this cd are sweet and grindy. Wonder what he uses to boost...
    Thank ya.

I should get the head either tomorrow (today I guess since it's 2:37) or the next day.
