I've had this guitar for 7+ years now and it's spent most of that time in some state of disassembly. It's finally done, for now

I rescued the guitar from a pawn shop for $120 (remember when Japanese Jacksons were cheap?) and immediately stripped the boring trans red finish and added a third knob so I could have volume knobs for each pickup:

The guitar sat like this for a while until I saw that gorgeous USA CS dinky with a burled redwood top (I'm pretty sure the owner posts here). I immediately went out and bought some burled redwood veneer, a Gotoh GE-1996T, some BKP Blackhawks, and paid a local luthier to modify the trem cavity slightly so it fit the GE-1996T better:

I then got busy with life and the guitar sat under my bed for around 3 years until the start of 2020. My wife refinished a desk which inspired me to finally get off my ass and wrap up this project. Work from home gave me plenty of time to screw up and start over while ignoring my real job. I had a lot of trouble with the edges of the veneer lifting and eventually took it back to the friendly local luthier (shout out to the Repair Zone in San Diego) to clean up my work before I ruined another piece of veneer. Some pics of the process:

I finished the guitar around July of last year but was somewhat unhappy with how it played and didn't gel with the Blackhawks. Got busy with my project car and buying a house so the guitar went back into a case under my bed, again . I purchased a set of EMG 57/66tw, shimmed the trem to have a flatter radius, added an angled neck shim, and another shim under the nut.

And a picture with my other Jacksons before I pulled the Blackhawks out:

    • 1992 Jackson Fusion
    • 24.75in Scale
    • Mahogany body. Looks like a one-piece until you notice the glue line inside the lower horn.
    • Burled redwood veneer. Grain filled and finished with Tru-oil.
    • Black Chrome EMG 57/66 TW with push-pull volume knobs for each pickup. Was pretty happy to learn the covers were the same color as the fine-tuning knobs on the trem.
    • Tremol-no
I'm beyond happy with the final product it feels great to rip cliche melo-death riffs on this thing again after almost 5 years of not being played. I actually bought my DK2M so I could have a 6-string with a trem while this was in pieces. Told my wife I would sell it once I finished this project but after 3 years she's accepted it as part of the family. I'm gonna refinish that one later this year

Geat job man, it turned out great. Not sure about the white knobs, but it looks sweet all the same!

They're actually ivoroid! The color is a bit washed out in the pictures but they're almost the same color as the neck binding. Definitely a love/hate thing but I felt like the guitar needed a bit of contrast after putting it together with black knobs.

    Great work!
Gold hardware could have worked too ;)
Man, that piece of veneer looks almost alive before being glued and cleared, like the book of the dead cover !!!

Dude, that thing is sexy af. Funny I thought the knobs looked a bit out of place too... But took me all of about a minute to look a couple more times and agree that they're a cool contrast/ compliment to the black FR & EMG's as well as that gorgeous redwood burl. Congrats on the completion.

Congrats man, that is a stunning upgrade. Good to know about Repair Zone, too. I’ve been thinking about hiring them for some work that I’m too lazy to do myself.
Congrats on the house too, that is a huge accomplishment.

Oh man, that looks wicked. When I read the words "burl veneer" I thought "Nooo, it looks great as it is!", but the finished article is absolutely killer! I love the knobs too, they look great against the wood :)

I can't recommend them enough. Knowledgeable, friendly, open about issues/mistakes/delays. They took longer than quoted to complete the work but I know they were slammed through 2020.
The burl does kind of look like a bunch of little faces screaming in flames :metal:
