So, my singer hates Capo's and says they're lame and degrade the sound. Post your opinion! Lol

 If it were me playing in your band, I'd just ride the second fret. There's no need to tune up or capo (that's the nice thing about bass - it's super easy to transpose), not that there's anything wrong with doing whatever you want either way. It's just that you rarely ever se bass players use capos because there's not too much of a point in using one. If you are playing the second fret capo'd or playing the second fret with your finger, it's pretty much the same amount of effort.

The last band I was in with a bassist, I played in B standard/Drop A while the bassist was in E standard exclusively. We never had issues and even on big stupid d00m riffs we still got a nice full, fat sound.

One time, our drummer asked him "why don't you have a 5 string bass?" and he replied "no dude, I play bass."

It's a fast and complex track, not possible.

I can understand as singer not liking capos if it puts the song into a shit key for them to sing.

To be honest I don't think that gets nearly enough consideration in metal. Too many bands just tune down cause it’s heavy without thinking what keys actualyy suit the singer.

What does a Key has to do with tuning? Tuning is about range and fingerings ease, a singer's voice is limited in range, what does that has to do with keys? One can play in any key within any given range and the instruments used don't even need to share the same tunings nor fingerings... (stringed instruments)

I've got my 7 stringers tuned to standard B, the bassist has his 5 stringers tuned to B flat and we play in tune with each other in several different keys.

If a singer cannot sing in tune due to a whatever range a guitar is tuned to, he flies out the window right there... but maybe that's why I'm going instrumental...

Then even more reason that using a capo won't make any difference! (?)

    In jazz , no affect.

In metal , more So than other styles , the tuning of the guitar , I.e the lowest 2 stings generally has a pretty big influence on the key choices of the band. Of course there will always be exceptions.

I agree that singer can adapt their range to any key , billie Holiday only had just over an octave they say , but unless they have really Good range , they are going to be stronger in particular keys.

if you can find , and only play with singers who can sing great in every key then power to you. Ive played with my fair share and the really Good ones even had preferences.

Unless you have a capo! Amirite?

You can just end the sentence there. If you can find a vocalist who can sing at all, you're at least a step or two ahead.

    I kid, I kid.

    Kinda.

Forgive me if someone has already suggested this, but have you considered just putting a capo on your singer?

@mongey if a singer can only sing in one key, he's of no use to me... maybe that's why my band is instrumental... not only because of this, obviously. When I'm just jamming in the guitar, I gravitate towards Em harmonic, but it doesn't mean I can't play in other keys, yeah I know that in guitar one just has to move fingerings up or down and one is set, but nevertheless, range has nothing to do with keys. Maybe that's why many bands just sound the same all over...

@TedEH you are not kidding, you're saying the naked truth everyone is trying to sweep under the carpet...

Well gentleman, it's over. My bassist and I determined after our last studio session that it just wasn't working out. My bassist and I have been together since the beginning so he's my counterpart. Anyhow, my singer did not take it well. He actually said some funny shit that I thought I'd share for comedic value lol. He said, "You'll never be happy with anything Pete you're just like your mother and that's why your ex wife left you.. I guarantee those songs will die with you if not for me"

Why it's soooo hilarious is he doesn't know my mother, nor have I ever talked about her to him lmao, nor does he know anything whatsoever about my ex wife (whom to this day I am still very close friends with and talk to frequently!). So yeah, this guy has been with the band 1.5 years and hasn't recorded a single track with vocals. Yeah, I'm the problem

I'd mail him a capo. But I'm kind of an a-hole at times.

Dumb capo comments aside, sounds like you've made an overall improvement. Nicely done.

Thanks man I just had to block his number as he's texting me with threats, yes both physical violence LMFAO and he's threatening to steal the songs and use them anyway. He said that last night too and I told him I have his texts stating he would steal them and then he said he was kidding and would never really do that but then said it again just a little while ago. Unbelievable.

So, demonstrated here is a strong correlation between hating capos and being a fucking lunatic.

He's been in the band for one and a half years. Hasn't laid down a vocal recording to a single song. There's always some excuse. Originally I had an ultimatum of record one track with vocals by December of last year. But with Covid I figured OK screw it, no more ultimatum.

    That's childish behaviour... rockstar syndrome...

A few years ago, about 5 or 6, I was casting for a band, older guys than me. The other guitar player had a few chops on his fingers but was way out of his head. It didn't work so, I pissed over the subject and moved along, but he kind of stalked me online on facebook with a fake ID and sent me email with threats and all. He said I wasn't allowed to play his musics, to which my reply was "I would never EVER do such a thing. Your musics aren't that nice."... So I signed him on all porn sites I could find with all the emails I found he had, even those he probably used for work... and obviously blocked his phone and emails... This guy was, at the time 54 years old and still lived with his mom, as in some kind of "mother to teen son" relationship alike... crazy dude... really crazy...
