    S'up guys?
I'm kinda taking a break from metal and spend my time experimenting with stuff. Could not really sleep well the last couple of nights so I gave sampling a try. Take something existing and create something completely different using mostly FX rather than write all the music. Can I extract vocals from a song and throw everything else (beats, bass, whatever) out of the mix?
    Long story short, this happened:

I'm a big fan of clams casino and wanted to make a hip hop song at first. Kinda turned into a trip hop song though haha

    Cheers,
    Marv

Cool man! If you can slow the bpm down a bit it would add to the mood a significantly.

I love it at the tempo it is at, less bpm could prove very interesting as well.

OP: You'll be happy to hear that not only did I love it, I'd say you've done an excellent a la Clams Casino. Even the rawer drum kit sounds fitting, like something he would oddly decide to use.

the song is cool but I had to skip through it, I feel it drags on and it repeats it self too much. Up until around or after the 2 minute mark is just to repetitive and boring for me until the change up that follows.

I've actually tried to go slower :yesway:
I've tried everything from 140 (which practically turned it into a drum'n'bass song ) down to 70bpm (which probably would've been the best tempo if I still wanted to make a hip hop song), but I thought 100 works best. The next one will probably be slower.
But thank you, I was surprised it worked so well considering this was my first try at this style of production

The last part was the one i made first. The next day I stretched the song to over 4 minutes and did not really put much thought into the song structure. Maybe I'll go back to this song in a while and try to make it a bit more exciting :yesway:

Thank you guys for the feedback :wavey:

If you're up to it, there are two songs I've always thought would be perfect vocals to be sampled for this style of music

"Above The Lone" - Love Spirals Downwards
    "Firefly" - Airiel

I really liked it. I'd like to hear a talented rapper lay some verses down over this

Me too, to bad I don't know a good rapper...
If anyone knows a guy (or can do it himself): download the track and lay down some vox. I'd love to hear it :yesway:

Cool dude! It reminds me of some stuff from the .... Buttons - I'd love to try doing something similar!

Which software did you use to rip out the vocals and to modify them?

    It's all Logic X :)
Most guys I know who do stuff like this prefer Ableton though.
Basically all I did with this song was to use the eq to remove the bass and the beat (which was pretty easy, surprisingly). A big low cut and a gentle high cut and some in-depth eqing is all it took. I think M/S would work, too, but with this one it wasn't necessary.
Next step: find out the original tempo. Stretch it down to the tempo you want. Reverse it. Send it to a reverb and a delay bus. Start cutting out parts you like and experiment with them. Go crazy with all kinds of FX, automations etc. Then I programmed the beat and bass. Then pads and stuff.
S'all pretty basic, there's still much to learn. But this is fun :yesway:

Add some glitch to the drums to fight the repeat feeling in parts.
    Very cool song

This is awesome and should be in a movie. A group of people are getting ready to steal something. This will be played while they show the montage of them doing planning, reconnaissance, the actual job itself and then the squeaky clean getaway before anyone even notices.
