Serious question - is this a joke?

This is interesting to say the least.

I have to say I hate the beginning but there were many parts of the song that I liked. I get what they're trying to do here, but unfortunately it's only a 2,5 or 3/5 star song. They could've done every theme here with a more refined and more catchy approach. Now it feels just like a mashup of different ideas that has kind of an "ironic" touch.

That's pretty much what I was thinking too, there's a song in there somewhere for sure but this sounds like they threw a bunch of scratch tracks they all recorded for the drummer to track with or something lol.

I admittedly don't follow them nearly the same as I once did - do his vocals always sound this way now? Again, sounded like a scratch track where he wasn't super committed to the performance.

I read somewhere he blew his voice out a few years ago, live footage still sounds great though. In a recent interview with kerrang he said they were dead against using autotune unless they wanted that specific effect (like on the track "lost"), and they wanted to move away from the traditional M Shadows "snarl". I dig it, sounds similar to his vocals on The Stage which were very good.

Hahahah these dudes don’t give a faaaawk about writing songs they know their fanbase will love. Song’s weird but I very much love that they’re just doin’ whatever the hell they want.

Saw them open for Metallica right before COVID and it was a pretty great set. Hadn't followed them in years even at that point but I was happy to see them still holding it down.

I respect that he doesn't want to correct his pitch or phone in the vocals - but maybe bury them a little bit more lol.

I feel like this is supposed to be funny in an incredibly cringey way. Like, in an "I have the mentality of a 9-year-old" kinda way. Unfortunately, Avenged Sevenfold are neither clever nor capable of writing good songs, so here we are, with this monstrosity.

They lost their songwriter. They managed to squeak out one more album afterward by emulating classic metal but it was very clear that the ideas died with the Rev. Kinda surprised they're still trying tbh - must be a money thing.

Well, they went pretty quick into LULU level in their career...
I will listen to the album when released vecause I have liked their previous albums like The Stage but this seems a bit too much maybe.

Whatever, we'll see

Wasn't really a fan before, but I did listen to a bit of this, enough to state that my status remains unchanged.

The city of evil album exists. And it’s fucking amazing.
