koa. the redwood and spalt are usually pretty soft woods and aren't anywhere near as nice as that koa. Finding that figured of koa is really hard.

Agreed. It took me a long long time to find a suitable piece of highly flamed koa for my Skervesen build. That koa top is sick.

As someone who spent more than a year hunting around for figured redwood, that's either photo enhanced or probably the most intensely figured piece I've ever seen. I'd probably go with that. It's a pretty unique effect.

The koa's nice too, but it's just like..pretty good koa. And the spalt's pretty blah by spalt standards.

I’d tip toward the redwood myself if that’s THE ACTUAL top...there’s some easy tricks for “hardening” softer woods and it’s rare to get that consistent of figuring in bigger sizes. But it’s all preference...I agree that particular spalt is nothing outrageous

They all look awesome, but I'd choose the third top.

2nd picture, I'm not sure if that's the Koa or Redwood people are mentioning (I've seen a lot of koa tops look that way after staining)

2nd pic is koa, 3rd is redwood. Rusti prob just wet the tops with some denatured alcohol or something to show off the grain, a lot of people do that to get a good idea of what the figuring will look like under clear coat/oil.

Koa really pops in the sun. You already have a Koa axe right? I don't usually like spalt but thats a cool piece and I always lean towards burl redwood.

The third picture, which is the redwood I guess, is pure wood porn and the one I'd prefer to use!

Third one. Redwood topped rusti would be way more unique than koa one. PLUS that exact one is absolutely stunning.

I love koa as much as the next guy, but flamed redwood is stunning when it's big like that. Bury it in 2K and you won't have to worry about the softness aspect.
