Do any of you know the major differences? I've always heard they are literally the same guitar just stripped down. And which do you prefer? I already own the 1999 rg7620 but been thinking about the universe same year 1999 not the newer ones.

Okay by saying different bodies do you mean the neck joint and input jack? And how are the necks different I thought they were from the same batch? Also how are the frets different?

Front route vs. rear route. The UV necks of that era were slightly thicker and rounder than the RG7 neck. The UVs also got bigger, wider frets.

They're just different guitars. Some have a preference for or against.

Ive compared both and agree. They are completely different guitars, especially in feel. My UV7SBK has the thinnest neck in my collection.

Its the all black one with silver dot inlays. They were made in 97'. The plainest of all the UVs

This was my experience too, and the entire reason I sold mine. In hindsight, I regret not just learning to live with it.

i had one of the later uv777bk's with the five piece neck and it was just too big for my taste.

I got to play a 99' UV777BK with the mirror pickgaurd and the first thing i noticed was how much thicker the neck was. I haven't played the Jcraft model with the 5 piece neck. I wonder how much different it is?

Can’t go wrong with either one imo. I prefer the older UVs although you’d probably prefer the AANJ so a 777bk would probably be better. :agreed:

They are the same guitar - in different incarnations. Kind of like twins, but one is better looking than the other...

Except in this case: the 7620 has very standard, great quality fretwork; the uv777bk has PERFECT fretwork; the 7620 has a thin, sleek, Ibanez neck; the uv777bk has a SHRED neck; the 7620 has Newcustom 7dimarzio’s and the uv777bk has the blaze, which are excellent pickups; the 7620 looks like a regular Ibanez super strat, which it is, a high quality , right priced instrument..the uv777bk is like one of the most beautiful guitars Ibanez made, maybe the nicest 7 string ever made, as well as the first with the inlays, the binding, the “graphic” and the pick guard...the uv777bk is the 7620 taken to a luxury, custom level for Vai, or as they would say now, its the “boutique” version of the RG, but the uv777bk is an RG7620 for all intents and purposes.

Basically, if you are a shredder and you have the extra money, uv777bk
If you aren’t a shredder, but you want the best 7 string for your Buck, 7620

Hope that helps...just one uv777bk/7620 owner’s view (and I’ve had 2-3 of each model over the years)

Hey dude, I am glad that analogy/comparison worked for you. I keep the UV packed up because my 7620 is modded and souped up to my specs, and while my UV is a better “playing” guitar, they are almost the same , but because I modded it with pickups I liked with a specific wiring, I enjoy playing the 7620 a bit more now.....but whenever I need a reminder who is the king of 7 strings, I take out Mr Vai’s greatest invention, thank god for Steve man....I really think he paved the way for ERG to become what it became, but hey that’s just a thought...

Enjoy and make sure you find an authentic Ibanez, there are a lot of fakes these days on models like that....and you’d never know it unless you pulled the neck off.

Max of Metal knows more about that though, he is the Ibanez guru.
