I saw an ad on facebook. A local guy wanted a guitarist, bass player, and drummer for a recording gig. Didn't say what kind of music or any details. I hopped over to the guy's profile, and saw nothing music-related aside from a super brief status update that he was working on an album. I was curious, so I messaged him. He got back to me right away, saying he was only willing to accept top notch musicians. After some ten to fifteen minutes of conversing, most of that time me painfully trying to extract information, it got hilarious.

So the highlight of this was that the guy wasn't even going to be involved in the music side of it at all. He wanted to hire musicians to write and record everything themselves, and he was just going to mix the songs. Musicians would neither be paid nor credited in writing and were also required to promise to drop everything and tour (also for zero compensation, mind you), if the album was a success (vaguely defined). This guy, being that it was "his idea," would take sole writing credit and absorb any profit. I politely declined and then he started getting all "why will no one will help me..." and I stopped responding. I suppose I could have pointed out that he was demanding a ton of work and offering literally nothing in return, but I assume this guy was either really honest and yet unreasonable or was just trolling me.

Anyone else run into anything as extreme as that?

    Lol

This is like pornographers whose "material" consists entirely of alleged "failures" from the "casting couch", or "translation companies" that cut up their jobs into "samples" farmed out to applicants for non-existant paid positions

He has since taken down the ad and blocked me. I thought I was pretty nice to him, considering. I wonder how many other musicians contacted the guy.

By the way, anyone want to build me a custom guitar? I won't pay you or tell anyone you built it, since it's my idea for you to do it.

Builders, don't listen to this - if you do it for me instead, you'll get exposure. Don't do it for free, do it for the only valid remuneration for those in the music industry.

That's pretty standard these days tbh. There are thousands of examples on the internet of people asking artists to play on their wedding, paint a picture or craft something for them for free. As if artists don't have bills to pay.

    People are entitled.

Etitlement is only half of it.

It's the same for any profession where artistry is needed. Pastry chef, web designer, graphic artist, photographer... people basically think it's just one of those professions where exposure keeps the lights on, food on the table and a roof over your head. Even the ones that are willing to pay a wage pay well below industry standards. The mentality is that "it's just a hobby, it's not a real job" is rampant in the "artistic" industries.

That is awesome, lol. I haven't seen anything quite that ludicrous. Closest I can remember is a "singer" who apparently booked himself for a wedding but never bothered to hire a band or learn any songs, so he needed two guitarists, bassist, keys, and drums and he wanted someone to create a 4 hour set list, provide him with lyric sheets (in standard notation, lol), and provide a place to have three rehearsals.....three days before the event. He was offering $40/person and possible future gigs for possibly more pay. Dude got tore up so hard in a local musicians group someone told me he actually moved. I don't know if that's true because I never saw or met the guy, but the post was at 200+ comments before group admins took it down, lol.

This is amazing. This idea I'm sure was concocted by some internet nerd living in his Mom's basement thinking that he is smarter then the world. Typical get rich scheme by a loser with zero real life experience. He needs to hook up with James Threatin with his fake sold out European tour.
