I have HH Strat with an alder body and a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge that's giving me too much bass response. Not having a lot of experience with alder bodied guitars, I am unsure as to what would be a good replacement for the Super Distortion. Tone-wise, I'm going for a very heavy crunch/ 80s metal tone.

    Any suggestions?

    Seymour Duncan JB.

On alder, it's the definitive 80s sound.

Or go Suhr Aldrich if you want a more 'refined' JB.

Solder the red & white wires together, and the green/bare wires to ground.
This will put it in parallel.

Try this first before chucking more money at the pickup chase.

    Lower the pickup a little.
Or put a cheap EQ pedal in front of your amp and roll off the bass.

Duncan Custom Custom would probably work well. It's a bit like a skinnier / slightly tighter JB

Before dropping money on a pickup swap, I always recommend playing around with your amp settings.

    Assuming you've done that already:

Duncans seem to favour the higher ends more than Dimarzio. JB and Custom will get you in that ballpark pretty well. George Lynch's Screamin' Demon gets pretty kick-ass 80's type tones as well, but it's definitely a lower-output pickup than most, so you may be turning your gain up a bit.

OR, another humbucker I absolutely love, Bill Lawrence L500XL, either Bill Lawrence USA or Wilde Bill (different brands, basically the same pickups... Lawrence himself went and started Wilde Bill after, I guess, a falling out with the Bill Lawrence company.) You can get some nice crunch out of that, and it's pretty bright.

    Thanks for the replies/suggestions.

I've tried EQing around it, but it sort of seems like it's just something with this particular wood/pickup combo that's lending itself to, ... how shall I describe this.. an inordinate spike in the 200hz. Am thinking Fender must have thought coupling a Super Distortion with this body would add a little low end response. It does, but at the cost of making the guitar sound like it has a head cold all the time. :)

Will be looking into the JB and the Bill Lawrences pups. Thanks.

How will this affect the tone?

Duncan JB. The definition of hot-rodded 80's tone. Works wonderfully in the usual alder-maple combo
