Gear I have and currently play out with:

Peavey 6505+ (love the rhythm tones)
Marshall TSL100 (love the solo tones)
Pedal board which ends in a couple of stereo effects, namely Eventide Space and Boss DD7
Marshall EL34 100/100 dual monoblock power amp
    Various cabs.

My move to rack is simply due to me loving the stereo effects from my delay/reverb pedals setup and not wanting to carry two heads everywhere.

Looking for a decent (preferably valve driven) 19" rackmount preamp (or a floorboard if it REALLY comes to it) to do metal tones with. I have a Digitech GSP1101 and I like the tones I can get from that. I have no footswitch so just mainly wondering what else is around before I splurge for a Control 2. Not looking for MIDI controller recommendations here, I'm aware of the various options.

As I have some spare cash so wondering what else I could use to flavor things with preamp-wise. Either hidden gems, or new and wonderful. The last rackmount system I had from the 90s was a Marshall JMP1 running into a 50w peavey power amp of some description. Should never have sold the JMP1 but I have a few Marshall heads so got it gone. But that may be a little to 80s tone for what I'm doing anyway.

As for tonal influence, for rhythm think Within Temptation (newer), Evanescence, standard 7-string sorts of detunedness. For solos, think 80s! I use an ESP Arrow-7 and a Jackson Broderick-7, EMG loaded both.

Why not something like the pod hd pro?. Not valve but loads of pre amp choices on board and a tonne of i/o. Stereo options too.

Plus used now you can find them cheap and if you are lucky the previous owner purchased the full amp packs and it will come fully loaded.

Control 2 and Mesa Rectifer preamp in GSP loop. That's my cuurent preamp through a Meas 2:50 into a Mesa 412.

Engl E530 and AMTSS10 are pretty good too.

ENGL E530 is the best preamp I played. It also has stereo send-return for various connection possibilities.
I used it as a dual amp setup with stereo poweramp, stereo eq, stereo delay and two cabs

I own the E530 too and I dont know, there is something Im not sure about it now. I used to love it but Ive gone off it somewhat. Granted never ran it into a real Cab and instead was using IRs > PA.

I think it only sounds really good when you are tuned low. Running a strat through it in like Drop C etc sounds pretty weak. Bass on full is like the normal bass on 2 on other amps. Serious lack of low end.

    8 string > E530 = winner
    6 string > E530 = too thin and trebly.

Well, this doesn't make any sense. In F# it sounds fine, but in C there's not enough bass? And you're running through a PA... Bass is full on? Is your mid set to zero?

Have you ever used one?. Lack of low end is a common knowledge feature with this preamp.

Oh, I forgot. If you can find a deal on a Peavey Rockmaster, and maybe have it recapped if needed. Very impressive and verstile tube pre.

ART DST-4 is killer. I didn't get much time with mine and let it go with my Marshall power amp like a dummy! And I got it for $50 at a small shop. Now I can't find one and $200 if I do. I set it up for the guy off CL to play and boosted it and was like "wow, this is what was missing". Clean is tube, and I think that tube buffers the gain channels because it did not feel solid state to me. The Insane or whatever channel was over the top, but good old school or black metal. The Retro channel boosted was awesome from thrash to metalcore.

And another thing to consider is a Randall RM4. I know its a money pit, but you could have 4 preamps in 2 rack spaces.

I'd stick with the GSP 1101. I run mine into a DBX 215 EQ into a stereo power amp and stereo cab. Sounds great.

My friend runs it trough mesa 2:90. Plenty of low end. Bass on e530 is set to noon.
I used old Kitty Hawk poweramp that is not that bassy so I boosted more bass with eq after the preamp with bass on 3h on e530

this seems cool, but it's a full amp in 2-rack space. With MIDI to boot:
