Looking for pickups for a parts tele I'm making to play doomy post punk/cold wave ala Molchat Doma. Roasted swamp ash body, rosewood neck. Mega bonus points if you can point me to any that offer black nickel/"cosmo black"/black chrome covered neck pickup. Many thanks!

I'm really trying hard to not recommend a good ol' EMG 81 with a black brushed chrome cover.

It's no, good. I can't do it. It's that. Go get one of those, be happy, it's awesome.

I dont know of any cosmo black set, but BKP offers a black one. Pretty much any regular SS tele will get the tone you’re after, except maybe the high output speciality sets.

Listen..OP..everyone is gonna come in here recommending a bunch of stupid ass expensive boutique pickups when they don't even know what you're talking about and probably didn't even read what you said. They do it ALL the time.

I've done that kind of music, dealt with musicians in that genre, etc. Do NOT spend a bunch of money on pickups. At the end of the day for that kind of sound the pickups aren't what matters. Your amp, how you EQ, and how you play are what will get you there. The only thing I'd say is obviously don't go for a super hot pickup but beyond that, literally damn near any pickup will get you there.

If you want a specific color, I know Seymour Duncan does custom pickups. You can order one of their base models and have them change the cover. Your pickup doesn't have to be super clear, or super high gain, or any of that for your genre of music so there really is no point in spending a lot of money on a parts tele. Save yourself the headache and go through the Seymour Duncan website, look at what they offer tele wise, pick what you think would sound best and have them put the covers on it that you want. It's gonna cost a little more but if it's what you want then it's worth it unless you don't want to spend that much. I bought a custom set and all they did was change the pole pieces to gold and the set ran me 340 bucks. Wanna cut that in half or more then buy the standard version. Buy them from a store like Guitar Center. SD will let you return your pickups and swap them for something else if you don't like the ones you have.

Better yet if you've given up on the color go HERE, pick a set and install it and work on nailing all the other details in your tone chain...then once you have a clear view of what you're looking for, order from Seymour Duncan. But honestly I doubt you'll even need to.

If it were me, I'd just hit up ebay/reverb and grab some stock Fender tele pickups or maybe used duncans/dimarzio/etc. At the most you could find a set and replace the neck pickup cover with a black one for pretty cheap.

+1 "been there done that you don't need fancy pickups to do it"

I do understand that aesthetics matter, however. It looks like lots of places sell black tele neck pickup covers for <$20 and you can just order one swap it yourself.
