Hey guys , i've been invited to jam with my friend's band , pretty Skinless/Deathcore sound , and i like the guys alot. they needed a lead guitar player and i offered to listento them jam and they seemed pretty excited. After hearing my good friends guitar tone and complaining about it to him , he just doesn't seem to hear it.:nono:

hes using some weird solid state half stack , but that not even the worst part. Hes got his gain all the way up (by the way , when i say all the way up in this post at any time , that means as far as the knob will go) , highs all the way up , and lows up all the way WITH THE MIDS AT ZERO !. I'm looking for help on the best way to tell him he has Fail-Tone , and how to convince him to dial it in properly.

I even tried his setup and couldn't even pinch harmonic on it because it was so bad. Barely able to tell one drop B note from the next. I couldn't even hear the bass player. I dialed in my settings to it and tried it to better tone success :hbang:, but he was convinced he needed "that thump" you get from scooping the shit out of it.:noway:

so should I try and talk it out with him :ugh:, or just dial my guitar in properly when i try my gear out and cut right through him?:fawk:

This is pretty much the setup I use too. I have a solid state marshall, I run a boss metalzone (gain all the way up) into the clean section and scoop it like an ice cream cone in august....mids at about 2, bass and treble at 9. Its the tightest tone I can get out it, anything higher than 4 on the mids and the tone gets too muddy.

I suppose you could cut through him and then help him out when he realizes he's nonexistent in the mix..

I said acceptance. If his tone is shit and he doesn't realize, chances are that his playing is too. That in mind, you can just overlap him into submission. :flex:

Scythe straight through the mutha :hbang:.

If it takes making him near inaudible to crank his mids, then so be it.

Show up early to practice, or when he's not looking, dial him in. "Wow, my crate POS120XL sounds especially djenty today!"

Show him that he can't be heard and do a contrast between your tone and his.

Sneak into the rehearsal space when he isn't there, tweak his amp until it sounds like a much better version of this 'thump' he's looking for, and then pull of the knobs, turn them, and then put them back on so it looks like his settings, when in reality he's playing with the vastly improved tone. By your description he sounds completely devoid of aural distinguishability for tone, so this should work perfectly!

I want to vote for both 1 and 2 but i cant :(

I'd sit him down and sort him out, and when he starts to protest "no man, it sounds wicked!" you:

    1. tell him that the bassist is there for a reason - to provide bass. assist bassist on EQ if need be
    2. tell him that he is not heard in a band setting, and that those settings probably work fine in his basement, but hey, this is the real world
    3. amidst his sputtering, tell him to play 0-3-7 on his low B. You turn on your amp, and play 0-7-12 to harmonize. have the band listen, and tell him who is audible.
    4. re-EQ that amp!
    5. have him play, and see if he sounds all that great lol

Probably the best approach. Although when his sound is getting swallowed up in the mix, he'll probably counter by just cranking his amp louder.

Cut through him. In your case it'll probably be more like PLOWING through his tone.
I have the exact opposite settings 0 high 10 mid 0 bass, but it sounds wonderful.

One of the first two options might work depending on what kind of a person he is. If he'll listen to logic, then talk to him. If he's stubborn, lead by example. When he gets frustrated that he sounds like someone passing gas into an oil drum in a full band situation, maybe he'll listen to you more. Using this method, I have gotten both my other guitarist and my bassist asking me to set up their gear for them.

And if that doesn't work... KAAAAAAHHNN!!!!
