The thought just occurred to me that it may be possible to rout a perfectly rectangular hole for the pickup, and avoid those indents for the legs and screws. Perhaps some chiselling and/or drilling from the back with screw access on the back of the body?

Anyone ever try anything like this?

Gibson does this with some of the HP series Les Pauls, there have been others to do it as well.

Good God that pink one. I either love it or hate it. I'm not sure which.

So the height adjustment is done on the back as well. Interesting. Very clean looking. I bet the back is pretty ugly though. Then again, it is the back.

Personally, I think it's cool, even though it prevents you from changing the pickups.

Parker did a similar thing, and I thought that was cool too. It gives it a minimalist look that I really dig.

If you're sure you'll like the pickups enough to keep them stock, why not?

On the new Gibson, I find the pickups the least offensive thing about them. The colors aren't great, and those robot tuners bug the crap out of me.

Oni Guitars rear mounts his pickups so there are no side tabs.

I put a set of Instrumental Pickups in the guitar I built that don't have side tabs - there are screws through the top of the bobbin to fix the pickup to the guitar body which also looks a lot cleaner that routing for side tabs:

Holy crap that looks great. So they're kind of like P90s in that respect.

Didn't I hear that Gibson stopped doing it on the 2019 HP models? Either way, I really dug the look on the SGs, but thought it looked strange on the Les Pauls, possibly because of the Les Pauls tilted back neck, and how the bridge pickup stuck-up seemingly much taller, because there was no pickup ring to help break up that vertical distance, visually.

I do like a lot of the other examples shown above, and because I think so many of us are so used to seeing tremolo cavity covers, that a pickup route cavity cover on the back would be totally kosher with many folks, including myself.

It started on the 2018 models, but they brought back rings for 2019.

    It's all good.

Either way, obviously we're not the only ones that thought it looked bad on the LPs. They're back on the SGs too, which I thought it looked good on.

Yes Instrumental FTW. Real clean approach, I have used these before too and can vouch for it. Screws go through the bobbins similarly to the way the holes are already drilled straight through for the pole pieces. Everything is still done from the front, no cutting or drilling to the back. Don’t know why other manufacturers have not offered this option too.
