been looking at the 6505 and Invective MH heads and they look ideal for non Helix Jamming (i.e a proper amp rather than via Studio monitors) due to the 1 watt option. Any got any experience of them in general?

@Guitarjon has done several videos on his YouTube channel, Sonic Drive Studios. He speaks very highly of mini/lunchbox heads in general.

I have a 6505MH that I've been using with a Mesa 1x12 with a V30 since like 2015, lots of experience in 1 watt mode lol. What were you wondering specifically?

If you're looking for an overall recommendation, absolutely worth it.

I loved mine as a preamp into a bigger power section...

Why not get a little power amp for the Helix?

Apparently that’s what Ellis did on ‘Vermious’. MH into a Baron. Seems easier to just get a full size at that point.

So Ive tried the SD170 with a V30 cab and 1960 cab but I didnt like it. Couldnt dial out something high frequency wise. Tried it via the FX loop of a Marshall Annisvary I bought this week (and currently sent back as its 100 is just too loud) and it was ok but wasnt ideal.

In the 1 watt mode, how does it sound? Does it have to be reasonably loud to make it sound alright? Do you use it live or just at home?

I have one (6505mh). Use it as a home studio and practice type amp only. Absolutely killer for that purpose. I usually use it in the 1W or 5W mode and 1x12 for that use.

It's beastly for being so inexpensive, small, light, etc, can engage the silent load and send the preamp out (FX send) to an IR loader for headphone practice late at night, etc. Really versatile, the perfect home studio amp head for a metal guy, IMHO, you could build your whole home setup around it and do practice, recording, jamming, etc.

I liked Fluff's shootouts of the mh vs the big ones and his review; it is definitely formidable:

Never gigged with it, only played with friends who had electric kits - If it was mic'd and sent to a PA you could get away with it at a real gig, but I don't think it would keep up with a full acoustic kit. It's definitely loud enough though, when I first got it I turned it to 20 watt mode on about 11 oclock and my 87 year old deaf neighbor wasn't too deaf to file a noise complaint for the first and only time ever

As for the 1 watt sound, it's not bad just lacks low end thump (which is probably best for quiet jamming). It really only sounds bad at like sub 70db barely-on mode, anything louder sounds good to me.

Here's something I recorded going 6505MH (566 BMT) > Reactive Load > V30 IR decent on my speakers on it's own, no compression or EQ (I have no experience with making things sit in a mix, I'm just jamming with this lol)

    1 watt mode: https://www.dropbox.com/s/kuahi0qovjoz9al/1 watt mode.mp3?dl=0
    Same-ish thing (I don't have a way to re-amp a DI right now) on 20 watt mode: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cq02c5bnoghu36s/20 watt mode.mp3?dl=0

    I liked the 6505mh I played...But like my Randall RD1 head more.
And the RD5 even more than that.

Haven't used either of them since getting the HX Stomp/monitors fwiw...:2c:
