Interesting that there are bass amp models in there as well. Peavey's site wasn't loading for me for some reason, has there been mention if the amp is for guitar and bass?

Didn't the last version have the "VIP" version with bass and acoustic stuff, too? I thought the VIP stood for Variable Instrument Processing.

Vypyr's kick ass man, dunno why Katana got all the fame when Peavey's version killed it in every way shape or form. The 6505 model used to get like, RIDICULOUSLY close to my 6505+ combo.

Ah well... Both words of Boss Katana are awesome, while only one word in Peavy Vypyr is equally radical.

I can't speak for all versions, but I had two of the ones with the 10" speaker at different times and both would randomly reset or go into demo mode and dump and saved patches every couple of weeks. When they weren't shitting the bed they sounded really good for a practice amp, but totally unreliable for anything other than a monitor speaker to get some feedback when recording with in an apartment.

The Vypyr 60 was pretty damn good. The models were pretty good for the most part; the Plexi wasn’t great. The effects were done by Damage Control (aka Strymon) so the were good as well.

The only thing it lacked imo was an fx loop (I like a little more flexibility/capability out of my delay and reverb).

If it's better than a Katana I'd be interested, especially if it doubles as a bass amp.

In my personal experience, Katana's excel at the cleans/edge of breakup "rock distortion" DS-1 style, Tubescreamer into a clean amp style tones, where the Peavey just shines at high gain, the cleans are great too, though. My friend still breaks his Vypyr 15 out because it has a setting he can't seem to replicate on his helix, at least hasnt figured it out yet.

The feature-packed VYPYR X Series amplifiers

I love that they still use this phrase. It's up there with "plays like a dream"

@CanserDYI I liked a lot of the tones out of the 50w Katana I had. For what it is and at that price they're pretty damn good.

I don't see a Katana or Vypyr replacing my Axe Fx any time soon, if I wanted something light and portable I'd lean towards one of those amps for something simple.

Oh god no, neither replace a proper modeler or proper gigging amp, I personally wouldnt Gig with my Katana as after a certain volume it doesnt really get louder, it gets more shrill.

I personally don't really like the Katana anymore, I did for a little while, hence why I bought two, but they quickly became dust collectors when I got my helix and captor for my tube amps.

The vypyr to me never tried to encroach into "you could gig with this" territory, as they always kept their headspace in the bedroom practice amp game, and maybe thats why I'm less likely to criticize, but I just really like the sound of my Vypyr, maybe thats because I never tried to use it as more than a set up/practice amp.

Did Peavy have Line6 under their umbrella when the first VYPYR models were designed/built? Leveraging some of that expertise that's gone into the Helix products could be interesting. Especially since there's never been a "Helix combo".

Nah, Line 6 was independent until a few years ago when Yamaha bought them.

To be fair; that was probably a wise move. The bedroom jamming space is much larger and more profitable. One of the reasons why it's taken until relatively recently for all digital stuff to break into the live space is because they were up against crazy stiff competition from the existing analogue gear. When you can offer your AxeFX or Neural DSP gear that legitimately sounds as good, then maybe people will put their hand in their pocket. But who the fuck wants to buy a 75% good 6505 sound when they already own a 6505?
