My favorite 7-string pickups are EMG 707 and the Fishmann Fluence Alnico (in bridge position). Obviously I'm an Alnico fan. Got a Solar 7-string and the Solar passives are OK but a little fizzy on honky sounding so I'm curious what I can swap them out with to give more that chainsaw growl without the fizzy top end. Any suggestions anyone can offer?

Have you considered Dimarzio D Activators? They are often used as a passive replacement for EMGs.

I have a Nazgul in my AW-7 and i think they have a very nice growl to them. But they are ceramic though.

Ive played a whole lot of humbuckers, the most growliest pickup Ive ever tried is the Bare Knuckle Black Dog. I'd imagine the 7 string version would be a killer choise.

Have you heard the BKP Ragnaroks? They have a bit of that thick compressed feel and are definitely not fizzy. They are pretty thick sounding.

I will note that the EMG707 and the fluence moderns sound quite a lot different to my ears, so I am not sure which you are more leaning towards.

The D Activators appear to all be ceramic. I'm not a fan of that cold metal sound when palm muting that ceramics give.

I'd love to but the pickup routes in the Solar guitar I bought are routed for standard passive pickups, not soapbar routes.

I was actually just looking at the BKP page. Might be the best option, they sure are pricey though.

I swapped the Modern neck into the bridge as I wanted the alnico in there. I find them to be extremely similar to be honest.

Honestly I don't think you can get that sound with an alnico passive. At least I haven't found it.

If I were to look for a thick and powerful alnico, that would be the Warpig. But I don't think it relates to the 707 EQ-wise. Closest BKP to the 707 is the Miracle Man. ┬┐Maybe you could give it a try even though it's ceramic?

What about an EMG 57/66 set? Those come in standard sizes as well.

I guess you can always return them if they don't and were never installed. The retroactive line has three different sets you can check out. I jsut linked the one that was full alnico.

Dimarzio Tone zone/ air norton 7 string combo. Fantastic set and are alnico based like you prefer. Also if you are an EMG fan try the retro-active super 77-7 string set. Fantastic sounding IMO.

So I restrung the guitar yesterday with my strings and tuning. Today I did a recording comparison of the Fishman Fluence Modern's and the Duncan Solar's. To my surprise the difference was so incredibly minimal, they sounded sooo close. I wound up just switching to my Helix patch for my EMG guitar and the sound is nearly exact now so I'm just gonna keep the Solar's for now. If I decide to change I think I will do the Alnico Bare Knuckle NailBomb.

I'd be interested to hear that because the pick ups could not be so different sounding from one another. The moderns are much more high mid focused and the solar's have quite a bit more low end.
