    Hi everyone!

Does anyone have any examples, any thoughts, or seen a pale moon ebony fret board that has been stained or with a finish that would make it a tad darker overall? My custom build will have one, and I think that I would like it to be a tad darker so it the guitar has a little more cohesion between the way too many woods it will have.

    Thanks!

Wow, so you got a rare wood, know as BLACK and WHITE ebony and then didn't like that changed colors a lot?

Just get a gaboon ebony finger board, don't ruin that one.

It's like buying a 4A flame maple top and putting an Ibanez solid, thick as f**k paint all other it.

    -> No

Yeah I wouldn't stain that. Some PME has a lot fo black in it, like my KxK, but if you want to go darker and have streaks, etc go with the suggested Macassar Ebony.

quick photoshop job, just used the burn tool on the fretboard a bit.

if it's just a tad, like you said, I don't see it being THAT blasphemous.

Go with macassar instead, sounds like it is more what you're looking for and cheaper as well :2c:

He said a tad darker, not dye it black. You're all completely overreacting. There's nothing wrong if you want to stain it TC, the grain pattern is unique to that wood and Macassar won't match it.

Also, since it's yours you can do whatever you want with it.

I'd be interested to see how it works out. I wonder how well such a hard wood would take to stain.

This ain't a property rights debate. He CAN do whatever he wants. We just think it's stupid to dye it.

I don't understand why it's stupid to use his own materials in a way that he finds pleasing for his own instrument.

In fact, I think your opinion on the topic is stupid, if anything.

Ah. We disagree so I'm stupid.

I agree. However, no one said he CAN'T do something. We said he SHOULDN'T do something. He can do whatever he wants, we don't have to agree or like it. Considering PM ebony is hard to come by, I don't think our objects are hard to understand.

    Uhhh, well, strong opinions...

I also like the way the pale moon ebony looks, I just feel the the whiter part might stick out too much. That being said, I feel dyeing is the wrong word, more like tinting, just so the white isn't as white.

But in any case, I think I'm going to wait until it's closer to finished being built and I can see how well they body (ziricote) and fret board go together before making a call since no one has actually done it before.

I don't know if this is universally true, but I've heard that it's really difficult to color ebony except for dying it pure black (which requires no real evenness in the finish, just plenty of it).

That's my point. You don't agree with his taste and as a result you said his idea was stupid. I did the exact same thing to you hoping you'd see how needlessly rude it was.

Ebony should take stain or dye pretty easily. It's not the hardness that determines that, but the porosity and oilyness. I have some offcuts from the 8 string I just finished; if you can wait through the weekend, I can try to use an amber or some such stain and post the results here.

Side note: Porosity is my new favorite word. New goal for 2014, use that word at least once every other day.

That would be awesome. I've got plenty of time and patience for it. I ordered the guitar back last summer and still have until this summer before it comes in. Also, that 8 string looks pretty bad ass! :yesway:

 Oh man! What a clever tactic!

Given the quoted bit said "I" was stupid not my opinion, I'm not sure how much sense that makes. And given you didn't quite understand my point, twice...? And you seem to think I'm saying he can't do it as opposed to my opinion on the issue...?

Did I get my e-smackdown yet?
