Does everyone else agree that the premise of this thread is self-harm?

Minimum viable collection = how many I "need" + 1 ;)

If you only "need" one [according to my ex] then that equation only gives you 2.

Why isn't is

How many I "need" + infinity?

Or

How many I "need" + how many I "want"
... well, the thing is that the "need" of a man / woman / whatever in between is constantly changing and is not an absolute or finished subject. One can say that the physiological "needs" are constant, but those psychological / labor / activity ones are ever changing. A Portuguese poet once wrote "Mudam-se os ventos, mudam-se as vontades" (from Luis Vaz de Camões, it translates more or less to: the winds change, the wills change) about 500 years ago... so does "need", because once one evolves in something, the need evolves/grows as well... so the "need"+1 still rings true... I think...

The poem goes like this:

Mudam-se os tempos, mudam-se as vontades,
Muda-se o ser, muda-se a confiança:
Todo o mundo é composto de mudança,
Tomando sempre novas qualidades.

Continuamente vemos novidades,
Diferentes em tudo da esperança:
Do mal ficam as mágoas na lembrança,
E do bem (se algum houve) as saudades.

O tempo cobre o chão de verde manto,
Que já coberto foi de neve fria,
E em mim converte em choro o doce canto.

E afora este mudar-se cada dia,
Outra mudança faz de mor espanto,

Que não se muda já como soía.

... and translates to something like this:

Times change, desires change,
The being changes, the confidence changes:
All the world is made up of change,
Always taking new qualities.

We continually see news,
Different in everything from hope:
From evil are the sorrows in memory,
And the good (if any) is missed.

Time covers the ground with a green mantle,
That was already covered with cold snow,
And in me the sweet song turns into tears.

And apart from this changing each day,
Another change makes you even more astonished,

That doesn't change like it used to.

... now that I look at this poem, it kind of fits the thread somehow. One must acknowledge the change within oneself and outside oneself, that's the only way forward...

You've overlooked the fact that the equation means you "need" at least 1 + 1...which means you "need" at least 2...which means you "need" at least 2 + 1...and so on. At least that's how my life is going 🤣

I'm sorry, I'm not good at new math!

So the equation "need" + infinity is essentially the same

A minimum of 4. A 6er for standard tuning, a 6er for C#, a 7 string and an 8 string.

Like most other hobbies guitars are wants rather than needs. People into it for needs will be playing Squiers and Harley Bentons into Katanas.

Money thing mainly. I've only ever owned 1 guitar at a time. ATM I have zero. Next go round it'll still likely only be 1 guitar and use a pitch shifter for different tunings. Which likely means buying the Petrucci or Rabea plug in from Neural since none of the others have pitch shifting that I can think of.

this question is for anyone who has been playing one one guitar for the past decade and do not own any other guitars.
1- how do you stop yourself from buying another guitar?
2- what is it about this one guitar that keeps you from buying more guitars?

1- I know it's revolutionary and maybe a bit excentric but I need to have money to buy food everyday. I know, eating everyday, what a thing but it works for me.
2- my bank account. Everytine I check if I can buy another guitar I start crying and with all the tears in the eyes I cannot see if the guitar I was about to buy is the same or different to the one I already have so in case of doubt, leave it for a while and come back later but it happens all the times so...

PS: written from Cologne, I have come to see Muse live... See? I need food everyday, food for the soul also matters. One guitar is enough, no shows over a year? Impossible, I would prefer to finish my life.

as you grow older.. especially pushing 50's or 60's --- you realize all these guitars and gear don't mean anything anymore. Its all about the time you spent /experience you have with that 1 guitar.
Doesn't make sense to own more than 1 guitar to me anymore. Look at guitar players like Nuno .. sure he has had many guitars but all you really see is him playing that N4 guitar that you saw him play in the 80's. Its about that connection/relationship you have with one guitar. Unfortunately i say all this now but next week i'll see an awesome guitar again and that need and desire will compel me to buy it. HELP!!!!

The problem with me is different guitars have different inspirations, so I have a different connection/relationship to more than one guitar.

Anymore? Compared to what? "Meaning anything" is relative. Owning lots of guitars has never been "meaningful", but it's cool to own lots of guitars, so why not? If you enjoy owning them, that that's the only "meaning" you need. If you're not in a financial bind, or running out of space or something, then what's the actual problem? It doesn't sound like there's an actual problem here.

Unfortunately i say all this now but next week i'll see an awesome guitar again and that need and desire will compel me to buy it. HELP!!!!
It's 1000% perfectly healthy to want things. If you have what you think is an addiction, or you can't keep your spending until control because it's some kind of compulsion - then what you need is:

*say it with me, everyone*

A therapist.

I mean, I somewhat understand where you're coming from. But you can still do both.... I mean hell, I've owned guitars ranging from Kiesel, Mayones, Blackat, Aristides, Sugi made Ibanez, Aviator, etc. and you know whats my favorite guitar? My beat up RG3250MZ.

I've talked about it with friends that it's my most important guitar in my collection. That I would never get rid of and would sell every guitar I own if had to just to keep that one. I told them if you ever see it for sale, know that something is very wrong.

It sounds like you want some personal connection with a guitar rather than a bunch of sterile customs, but no one can provide that to you.

EDIT: I don't even know why I'm replying to a vejichan thread, I already know what I'm going to get.... nothing.

Hey, the cage-match of "need" versus "want" lasts a lifetime and is a pillar of the human condition. If you want to get down to it, unless it's your profession that puts food on the table, you don't technically need to play music, either. It's entertainment. It's a luxury. It may be something that we enjoy deeply and believe that a life barren of this type of enrichment isn't worth living blah blah blah, but see it for what it is. Imposing some arbitrary limitation on your hobby isn't going to make it more meaningful.

Now, regarding the concern of balancing gear shopping, etc. with actual playing, I doubt it's ever as bad as people make it out to be. For me? I post here during the day during the lulls where the array of Apple IIes and Tiger handhelds that act as my company's servers struggle to render the basic documents I need to work. I browse listings late night when I'm too tired to play. I write & play when the spare opportunity arises.

I would be fine with having just one guitar if it was logistically possible, but it isn't. I love neck position single coil tone for some genres, but I also want a neck humbucker for other genres, and there's no way to get that because no split-coil option I've heard can sound like a real neck positioned single coil. Then, there's the number of strings. For most non-heavy music I much prefer 6-strings, but for heavier genres, I'd need at least a 7 string.
