My guitar went to the lacquerer last month and haven’t heard much since then.
Just got an update - sounds like the build is coming along nicely. They are going to hopefully send over some progress pictures next week. Exciting times!
Good to know you heard from them. I haven't heard from them since November, and don't even have an estimate for the build. Been promised one a few times now and never got one. I know they are busy, but if the estimate is higher than my initial budget we might need to simplify the build. I'm optimistic so we'll see. Will keep everyone else updated just in case.
Best way to get a quick reply is to contact Barnes on Facebook.
General consensus is that when I put down a deposit, I should just not think about speccing an instrument for around 3-4 years? Is that right?
That is correct....
You should try as many guitars as possible to really get an idea of what you want and most importantly don't want in a custom instrument. Start with things like string count, scale length, multi scale or straight scale, forearm contour, neck finish, neck shape, pickup switch and volume knob position, inlays or blank board, Floyd or fixed or evertune.
They're the easiest things to figure out. Woods and pickups are a difficult area because of inconsistencies but its easy to figure out what you don't like. Same goes for Bolt-on, set-neck and neck-thru.
I was referring to the Daemoness wait list but thanks to you both. 17 years in to playing and I've hit the point where I know exactly what I want and there's nobody making it. Rather, there's nobody making it that I feel comfortable giving my money to.
What’s your dream build?
I could put down a deposit and then enlist in the army, do a couple tours in Afghanistan, finish my contract and be discharged before I ever get the guitar.
You ever get that deposit back?
Curly Mahogany with Quilt Maple Top
Rosewood/Maple/R/M/R Neck with a Maple Fretboard
Matching Headstock Veneer
A blue dye not dissimilar to https://daemonessguitars.co.uk/project/3544/ and a tiny blue microburst around the edges
Scraped natural binding on the body
24 Nickel Frets
Scalloped frets starting with 15th
Blue Luminlay Side Dots
42 MM width at nut
White Dimarzio CL/LF
Volume Knob, Piezo Blend Knob, 5-way switch
The only things that have really ever changed in my mind is the choice of black or chrome hardware and set neck or neck thru.
I've always been a huge LotR fan so it's been a dilemma as to which Tolkien-esque symbol I'd like inlayed on the guitar and where. Likely the Doors of Durin on the fretboard or the White Tree of Gondor, but I don't know if Dylan would even do stuff like that. If not, then something similar to the old map art.
Down the fretboard:

16:00 – Afternoon Tea.
18:00 – Dinner.
20:00 – Supper.

one doesn't simply order a lotr themed custom build
...and in the meantime the voyager reaches another solar system
Your specs do have some similarities to one of my Cimmerians:
Christ, I love that.
