Girls and boys, need a couple recommendations for BEFORE THE AMP noise gates. I run an old 50 watt (1981 I think) JCM 800. No FX loop on the back, of course, and I don't want to start farting around back there, it sounds great as is. Could use a gate when I've dimed everything and have a OD or boost pedal or two going. I am thinking of trying a Fortin Zuul but could also use a rec for something that's a little more binary. Thanks.

I've got a Decimator (first version) and a Zuul. Both work great before the amp. Both are transparent to the tone, but the Zuul closes slightly quicker for stop/start sections of playing, while keeping the same amount of sustain at the same time. It's why i switched to the Zuul.

If it just goes before the amp you’ll be fine with just the Boss NS-2. Just because there are fancier and much more expensive noise gates available doesn’t mean that the NS-2 isn’t any good anymore.

    ISP Decimator II.

I have not tried the zuul but I have probably 8 Decimators in action in different rigs, and they have not failed nor let me down. Easily found under $80 used.

ISP Decimator. Cheap, transparent, reliable, and simple.

The Boss NS-2 I found to be a tone sucker in both my rigs, YMMV

I see no need for some crazy expensive boutique gate.

Thanks all. Will try Zuul and Decimator. I’ve tried the Boss but did not care for it...it was like all of a sudden my amp was behind a curtain.

Throwing in a dark horse. Deadweald Audio in Germany just released the Golem 2 channel noise gate. Channel one is a simple one knob gate, channel 2 is a 3 knob studio grade gate used for effects such as reverb and delay. Can be used in front of imthe amp, in the loop, or 4 cable method. I currently havw it hooked up with all of my overdrive pedals in the loop of the gate and it makes the signal dead silent, no signal degradation, and super accurate gating.

I believe they will be $180 shipped from Germany, no tax.

Here is the diagram for wiring options.

Is that really the graphic Deadweald is using?

    ISP Decimator II

Now, with that being said. Granted your amp doesn't have an FX-Loop, but that doesn't mean you won't get any use of a two-way gate like the ISP G-String II or the Zuul. Let me elaborate:

With a single gate you have to choose where to put it. Without a loop, most critical spot would be right after the guitar, so any parasitic noise is gated before it hits the distortion boxes. But pedals (and specially boosts) also add noise, that would be going right into your amp unfiltered.

A dual gate like the ISP G-String II (or the Fortin Zuul, I presume) can gate both ways even if you don't have an FX-Loop (although that would be ideal usage). I used my G-String for years that way, going right after the guitar and also after the boost, sending a completely clean signal to the amp. It worked pretty damn well since you can lower the gain of the amp if you boost it.

It's interesting watching the "how many features of the noise gate chip from the 2203KK gate can we enable in a new pedal" push coming out to outdo the Zuul.

For gate choice either ISP Decimator if you want something readily available or one of the improved 2203KK / Zuul gate clones that have been mentioned. The Golem looks cool as it appears he added controls to some of the other chip features and/or added another gate chip (haven't compared to the chip documentation).

From the Facebook pics that certainly appears to be it in black or silver depending on the photo.

Zuul is a single gate it just has a key input for a clean guitar signal to improve the gate response. So for example you can put it in the loop but have the key signal off a tuner before any other pedals to help the gate response based on the clean signal.

It is. It's not my favorite but I also don't look at my pedals when I play. Lol

I used this gate for a couple videos already and it keeps everything that's in the loop absolutely dead silent. I couldn't be more happy with it

Kind of hard to when the pedal is named after Jewish Iron Man, isn’t it?

NS-2 in front of the amp, put the OD pedals in the NS2 loop like this:

    upload_2021-6-7_15-6-39.png

Gets rid of noise at the guitar level and tames whatever is in the loop. The biggest benefit of the NS-2 is that you can get a perfectly functioning used one on Reverb for like $60 vs waiting god knows how long for boutique gates to be in stock

Any time you engage the pedal you can shout "Except for this..... WOAHHHHH!! And there it is!" like Yngwie:

Are you able to use both channels simultaneously? If so, I may have to give this one a shot.
