NGD. Oni Content.

Late delivery tonight. So I didn’t have a lot of time to spend with it plugged in. More time tomorrow at band practice. As well as some more detailed daytime, outside pictures in the sun.

First impressions:

Less time to adjust than I thought. It’s fast. Real fast. Setup was great. Fit and finish are as good as anything out there. Frets were perfectly levelled and crowned. Nothing sharp anywhere. Neck is on the thin side and flat-ish. I normally don’t go for this, but this is super comfy and knew what to expect since I’d played a 7 last year.

Now for the real business. How does it sound? It’s hard to describe. It has its own sound. Big. Defined. Articulate. Pickups are loud but not overbearing. Lots of punch. Lots of definition. It’s resonant and sustains forever.

I’ll weigh in again after a few days.

I am beyond stoked. It turned out better than I’d dreamed and this is my dream guitar.

The pickups are Dan's design. The neck he customized a bit for me to give it a little more bite and less fatness. These things have to be played to be believed.

Ok. Some further observations after band practice.

Other guitar player wasn't there, so we took some songs that we had already written and tried them transposed onto the 8 string from drop C#. Some didn't work. A couple sounded cool, and one is permanently redone. We also wrote a new tune right away. I didn't even pick up my Suhr. Which is a big deal. I love that guitar.

So about the guitar specifically. Did not need a boost through my Herbert. The F# stays tight and there is ZERO mud. The pickups are responsive, loud, and cut really well. I didn't adjust my amp at all. I spent three and a half hours with it strapped to me. Its lighter than my six string. The neck is asymmetrical, flat-ish, and super comfy. Its pretty thin, which normally, isn't my thing. It works really well here. I haven't played an 8 string in 3 years, and it too over 3 hours to feel any fatigue. Perhaps my biggest concern was the length. I don't have large hands. Didn't factor at all. This guitar is unbelievably comfortable to play. Undeniably the best money I've spent on gear in probably ever. Beyond happy with this guitar. I need to put in more hours with it, to get all the extra stuff back under my fingers after the long hiatus. I have no doubt that I'll have no issues putting them in. Its an absolute blast to play.

 

Would anyone like to see a video run-through of this thing? What would you like to see? What questions would you like answered about these things? I'm not a great video editor, but I can make an attempt at it. Go through my live rig? Run through a digital modeller on my computer? Riffs? Leads? Cleans? Recorded practice so you can hear it in the room with a band?
