I've had my eye on Oni for several years, it's the kind of guitar that I never expected to own. Naturally this is one of my dream guitars and so I fear that I might come off as biased - I've let it sit for a few weeks to let the honeymoon period wear off so as to give the most transparent evaluation of it possible

    Pics first:

    Specs:

    - Rock Maple body and neck
    - Ibanez Wizard I style neck profile
    - Flame Maple body and headstock veneers w/ walnut stripe down the middle
    - Ebony fretboard
    - Custom hand-wound ONI 8-string humbuckers in EMG casings with ebony veneers
    - 28.75" scale
    - 5-way Ibanez style pickup selector
    - 1 volume knob
    - Fixed Hipshot 8-string bridge

My first impression was overwhelmingly positive, the transition from the Strandberg IPNP profile to the extremely flat profile of the Oni took a while but the tone and clarity absolutely made up for the initial difficulty adapting to the very Ibanez-esque neck.

The Oni pickups are absolutely outstanding, I loathe to dip into the pool of adjectives that people use when raving about pickups but they really are clear and responsive, they feel a little less hot than other 8 string pickups I've played and the low F is punchy and tight sounding. It chugs hard and heavy and cleans up nicely when changing the 5-way pickup switch and rolling the volume off. So soundwise it's an absolute dream. Definitely a lot better than any other 8 I've ever played, Strandberg included.

After looking the guitar up and down there are no luthier-related flaws to speak of, which is fantastic but also admittedly what I expected from what I've heard of Dan's work. The woodwork is neat and tidy and the frets are as they should be, there are a few light scratches on the top and on the backplate, but for a guitar that has seen 2 previous owners this is probably to be expected.

The guitar is enormous. The rock maple body seems to weigh a ton after playing the Strandberg, but the guitar is very well balanced and you can feel the notes resonate all through the body, which gives the guitar a real feeling of being alive.

Aesthetically it's absolutely wonderful; the top is crazy in the right light, very deep flame. The ebony pickup covers are pretty luxurious too, they look amazing.

So very many pros and not a lot of cons, in fact the only cons I could mention all boil down to preference really

    Cons:

-This specific guitar was clearly made for someone who adores Ibanez necks, it is not quite as easy to play as the IPNP or perhaps the endurneck. For me that's a minor con, one that I haven't given much thought to - the tone makes up for it.

-The scale length is pretty monstrous: it's not totally unmanageable but a multiscale (or better yet, Oni e-scale) fretboard would push this guitar into god territory

-I wouldn't fancy playing a 40 minute plus set with this guitar, it is pretty hefty. But I don't think this will ever leave my house, so again not really a big gripe

    Pros:

    -Pickups are brilliant
    -Guitar is extremely well made
    -Guitar looks stunning
-Guitar sounds amazing, I'm unsure if that is thanks to the rock maple, but it is so very alive sounding
-Great scale length for an 8

Overall I feel that Oni is in a very elite group of luthiers, I have never played anything quite like it. Dan's expertise is so evident upon picking up the guitar - some days I just want to pack it up and ship it straight to Fredrik Thordendal and show him what he is missing :yesway:

    9/10

Nice! Although, I'm not sure how you figured you'd never be able to own an Oni, given the rest of your collection!

Oh, no, I should have mentioned: the Ormsbys, the Blaze and the BRJ belong to friends. Only the Oni and the Strandberg are mine. Though I'll have my own Ormsby by next year :)

^That Sigma is an outstanding lens. I love the pics.

Also, congrats to the OP, the Strandberg and the Oni make one tasty pair.

Very nice. Oni's always look good, but this one looks particularly nice to me.

I'm also very intrigued by the idea of an all-maple guitar, I would love to try one out some time. Not a common thing, for sure.
