    JPX?

I thought they only had it in Barolo and other premium features...

    But anyway, lovely guitar! HNGD!

EDIT: I see the inlay on the first fret, story checks out.

Last week I visited my old GC out of nostalgia for the drive and wanting to say hi to a few folks. Of course I checked out some guitars, focusing on the used section. While I tried a cool SL1, nothing really jived with me. But then... before leaving I decided to have a look at the new guitars and this one jumped out at me immediately! This store usually didn't have any JPs let alone in this awesome color. To boot it was on clearance! I had them bring it down and was sad to see that it was in need of TLC. Anything below the 7th fret was buzzing like crazy and the strings and frets were badly oxidized. Just for shits and giggles I tried it out anyway and noticed that on the useable part of the neck it was incredibly easy to play in spite of the shot string set! I had them tweak the truss rod for me and played it some more and I was on my way soon after that to see what it'd be like with some cleaning and a fresh set of strings!

Here are some pics from my tech session:

I can't imagine covered pickups fitting without some routing!

I had to do some serious cleaning of the frets and board, polish up the bridge, reset the action and truss rod, and then I started to rock. I noticed it going badly out of tune w/ trem usage so I called the Music Man customer service number and they advised me to raise the bridge on the pivot studs after we exhausted any other possibilities. Sure enough that fixed it! A+ to the guy I talked to, who even offered to have it shipped to them free of charge for a proper setup. Now that it's all sorted out I'm amazed. The neck is just so damn easy to play, and the notes always ring true. I have the action a hair above 4/64'' which to me is perfect since it's easy enough to play but avoids buzz and keeps the sustain I want from my guitars. Bends are easy as all hell and slides literally glide over the neck. The ergonomics of the guitar are great as well... the forearm contour puts my hand in a very comfortable position, and standing up the guitar goes right to where I want it... effortless... I played it for hours today without tiring. My one gripe is that the jack placement doesn't work well for seated classical style. I have to mock JP by sticking my right leg off to the side, and even then I'm liable to hit the cable and possibly cause noise.

As far as the tone, unplugged it is loud, articulate, and has plenty of sustain. The sound plugged in is indeed a bit dark, but only noticeably so when playing solo. As soon as I put on some kind of track it sits very nicely in the mix. The neck pickup is AMAZING on the clean channel... very jazzy. On the lead channel it indeed articulates every single note during speed runs... very defined. The bridge pup is pretty sweet but still a bit dark for my tastes. Ironic since I love crunchy sounds! It works great for lead and doesn't get cloudy on chords, but I don't find it having that gritty edge I like when I'm playing some heavy rhythm chords. What I find strange about the dark tone is that the pups are actually quite far from the strings (due to the direct mount without springs), which in my experience usually means they would be harshly bright and brittle.

This is a limited edition they did for GC.

I really dig the color... the best of a sparkle and a metallic finish all in one. The finish, pearl tuners, inlays, and stainless frets look amazing in any kind of lighting, whether it is sunset or the LEDs from my amp. So much that I've dubbed this guitar Lightcatcher  It also works really well with the contours. My dad said it looked like cast metal.

    Great guitar! Congrats!

I use a 90 degree jack on one end of my guitar cable for classical style seating and that way the input jack and chord won't bug you.

@ YJGB: The JPX has been available in baralo, roasted maple/black sugar (limited), this turquoise with roasted maple (limited), a Quilt blackburst (only GC exclusive), and the upcoming emerald green PDN (limited).

Thanks for all the love guys!

It really made my day to find this guitar... whenever I was feeling GAS it tended to be for something with a striking pearl finish, HH with a trem, a good piezo, and stainless frets. Finding the whole package was lucky! This is likely the last purchase for a very long time as I really am at the limit of how many guitars I can actually take care of and play :)
