Well, I've been meaning to get an ESP for about a hundred billion years (thanks Hetfield), I've been wanting to upgrade my seven for a while as I never fully got used to the hipshot bridge on my Ormsby HypeGTR, and I've been GAS-ing on a tele shape guitar for a long ass time, so I figured I might as well kill three birds with one stone. This was a pretty great bargain, my bonus had just come in, etc etc.
Anyway it's a really nice guitar. The ESP tele shape is really underrated. I like the understated look- I'm not a fan of that DEATH BY GAUDINESS Kiesel type look, although I reckon I'll change out the black pickguard for a fluoro blue one or something, just to break up it a bit. It's fairly heavy for a guitar, but it's like.. 4 KG or something? So it's only gonna bother you if you're a supreme wuss.
The previous owner took out the stock EMGs and put a nazgul and sentient in it, which I'm fairly ok with, at some point I might chuck warpigs or some massive output thing in it so it becomes an unbeatable sludge/doom/psych/drone machine. As it stands It's pretty great, a bit woofy but essentially I'm playing it through an orange, through a big muff, in G# (that's how the previous dude had it tuned/stringed up for) through a set up that I've kinda optimised for a Les Paul in standard tuning so expecting some clean, super tight distortion tone seems pretty silly.
I'll upgrade my cab at some point, I basically play doom, downtuned bay area thrash and a lot of drone/shoegaze/really stonery stuff, so hopefully I can get it a brighter tone when I need it.
The clean tone is divine. I love a really thick clean tone, think: Isis sorta clean stuff, and it's got that in spades. Pretty great through a hall of fame and a space echo. It's probably the ultimate anti-funk guitar. Big chunky neck which I really like, and I'm a big fan of the bridge.. whatever these types are called. When I'm not droning away I play a lot of Hetfield/Hannemann kinda stuff and it's a heap of fun for that. Action is not too low, but I've always preferred a medium action.
It could probably djent fairly well, but all djent (all? all!) completely sucks so I guess we'll never know eh.
All up it's pretty fantastic.
