She’s all finished! Here are some hastily taken pics. Please excuse the lack of contrast between the guitar and the wood floor [IMG]

    Specs-
    Sapele body and neck
    Macascar Ebony fretboard
    EMG Het Set
    Bone nut
    Schaller locking tuners
    Gotoh bridge / tailpiece
    Nitrocellulose lacquer finish

And here’s a shot with my first build.

The saplele guitar is obviously the heavier of the two, at 10.9 lb. As far as sound, the sapele guitar has a great midrange and high end, with a bit less bass than her all-mahogany sister. Definitely a joy to play through my cranked Boogie JPC2.

Very nice. i learned how to play guitar on explorers, and always wanted an MX-250 so this tickles me fancy.

I’ve always wanted an MX, but didn’t want to pay the crazy prices for one, so I learned to make one myself.

How did you do the finish? Do you have a spray booth?

I use a makeshift “booth” out of plastic sheeting and a box fan setup that I place in front of the garage door. As long as I sweep a little while before spraying, and mist the air with a spray bottle right before, I don’t have a problem with trash getting in the lacquer.
Here are pics from my first build, showing the booth.

Your builds are amazing. But your DIY spray booth is amazinger! You should seriously do a DIY spray booth thread for the rest of us. I'd love to do that, and even stuff like misting the air is a neat idea.

Haha, there really isn’t anything to my “booth”. Just a frame for two $20 box fans to fit in a doorway, and hang some plastic from the ceiling.

To be honest though, on this build I didn’t even use the plastic. I just kept the area clean and sucked out the overspray and fumes with the box fan setup. I know that you aren’t supposed to use regular fans, due to the explosive nature of nitro lacquer, but I feel that there is nowhere near the concentration of fumes required to cause an explosion. The fans simply move the fumes out too quickly for there to be a combustible cloud of fumes. **Kids don’t try this at home**

As a fan of the Explorer shape this is beyond awesome! I love ebony fretboards but are difficult to find on Explorers that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.

Wow, I really like that. Very classy. The inlay on the headstock is a nice touch too. Very nice!

Thanks, it’s a metallic foil decal that I made on my wife’s Cricut! Maybe in the next one I will try a real inlay.
