Always loved the Explorer! Couldn't say no to this beast. The aged finish is 100% organic too.

Arrived this morning: "Rusty" my new to me 2005 Gibson Explorer! Based off the 70's models, this one is sporting a maple neck, mahogany body with (now aged checked to hell) Ebony finish. Immaculate fretwork with no sign of ware at all. Hand cut rusted steel pickguard, hence the name "Rusty"
The lacquer checking is insane on this thing! 100% organic as it's lived in its case for most of its life in what happened to be a cold area. I LOVE IT!
Plenty of dents and paint chips from when it was getting played but nothing that can be classed as damage, except a small neck crack at the back of the headstock (surprise surprise) that was repaired extremely well and now can't even be seen, as it happened before its time in storage.

I'll be swapping the EMGs out at some point but in no rush as I don't mind actives. I'll prob try and track down some original pickups for this model.

Got it strung up in drop B right now but its too short a scale at 24.75" for B  so I'll likely put it back up to drop D or something.

    FEAST YOUR EYES

Great minds think alike, cus I put 12-60s on it. It's holding up OK now that they are settling a bit but still.. a bit boooOOOOOooooo

And I've just been looking up specs about the neck. I was surprised to hear it was a maple neck according to this reverb page.

BUT from the small little chips and inside the truss rod cavirty it looks dark like mahogany so... not actually 100% sure right now. They DID make these with Maple necks as some points as this was based off the 70's models when Gibson were doing Maple necks so... I danno I'll keep digging and find out for sure.

Jokes aside that thing looks absolutely killer, and I bet it sounds just as gnarly. I've got an older Les Paul from the 90's with very similar lacquer checking (tuned to drop B :wavey:) and I will never let it go. Fantastic score dude! Happy NGD!!

 I know! I just need it to settle I think. But yea, I just couldn't say no to this awesome thing. Explorer, Gibson, unique with the handcut pickguard, cool story and extreme checking. Pretty much the complete package as far as 6s go!

    Nice
Love the pickguard and how the mahagony that shows through matches the rusty pickguard

Congrats man, that is an awesome looking Explorer!

I like EMG's but the Gibson 500T/496R is an awesome pickup combo and suits my Explorer well. The chugs are insane! I did try mine in B with a 12-60 and wasn't that pleased lol! It was just too much bass. But after I set it up in D with a 11-50 set, out of curiosity I downtuned it to C and B and it sounded a lot clearer! In D however it sounds like a beast!

Something in the dark recesses of my mind has awakened. I think I’ve seen this way back when it was new(er) on the old ESP forums. Love that pickguard man. Keep the EMG’s and just win at all those early 90’s melodeath tones.

    Sorry brother!

Yea, I'm planning on playing and keeping it until more of the Mahogany shows through, which I think will happen in time. I'd like to ware it through to the wood on the neck too, although this one isnt sticky at all which is nice.

Well.... It is authentic cus it wasnt Gibson that did it  GOt left in it's case for some 10+ years and was a cold area. Case is opened years later by the owner and found it looking like this. The guy didn't know what he had imo

Thanks man, that's good to hear. I'd like to get a 496/500 set in it again, just to experience it myself as Gibsons are kinda new to me weirdly enough. Never liked them until recently so avoided them for the past 20 years. My loss tbh lol

Yeah I totally get you lol! I avoided Gibson guitars like the plague and now I have a Les Paul and an Explorer lol! I was pleasantly surprised with the 500T and 496R. Not the most modern sounding set but they are gnarly for sure lol. I tried a few other sets of pickups out of curiosity and I've always put the 500T and 496R back. On the other hand the Burstbuckers that came with Les Paul I was not a fan.
