After MUCH trial and error (and $$) I feel like I finally have a rig that fits my needs and that truly inspires me. All that trial and error led me to a few goals:

    1) Minimize menu diving
    2) GREAT clean
    3) Excellent Marshallish crunch (from Plexi to JCM)
    4) 5150ish high gain tone
    5) Controllable volume

I couldn’t find a single amp that fit all those, though the Invective is reallllly close. The Super Kraken is maybe a touch closer even. But after playing the clean on the California Tweed, I knew finding a high-gain amp with a clean that good was going to be impossible. So...multi amp rig it is.

The CT has an insanely good clean. The best I’ve ever heard.

The SK has an awesome crunch based on a JCM900 and a lead based on the 5150. My only issue with it is that it’s tough to keep it at very low volumes as the tone opens up just after it gets a little louder than I always want. I’ve found this controllable with the EQ and/or a volume pedal in the loop.

The Mesa Boogie Head-Track is the piece that made it all come together for me, allowing me to use the pedalboard with both amps and their effects loops, and also allowing me to share a cab if I want (though I’m not doing that right now).

Beat of all: ZERO menu diving!

    Anyway, here are some pics:

    Killer stuff all around.

Question about the California Tweed: have you tried it with the master essentially dimed and using the "gain" knob to control the volume (treating it like a non-master volume amp, essentially). I'm curious how it holds up and what the overdrive starts sounding like. I suspect it'll be pretty loud by the time it starts to overdrive that way, but if you've been able to try it, I'd love to hear about it; how well it holds up or if it gets kinda flubby or ratty sounding.

Not sure what causes this, but if you try to quote the original post, they should show up.

I will try this tonight and report back.

    Badass setup, looks super clean.

Imgur blocks hotlinking to this forum.

Cliking reply is a workaround for some reason, it gets the image into the cache on your computer. Clear your cache or use a different device to access the thread and the images won’t appear again.

Any ideas on good alternatives to imgur? I used to use tinypic, but imgur's app makes it pretty easy to use.

Noice! Bought the Kraken pedal today. Wanted the pedal because another amp is the last thing I need but was seriously considering the Super Kraken while I was waiting for my dealer to get more. Have you owned the pedal version?

Thanks! No I haven't tried the pedal. It sounds great in demos though.

Nice. That's a setup I can be envious about :yesway:

I have some channel switchers that have amazing cleans, but none of them simultaneously delivers JCM800 / 5150 sounds. The closest all-in-one is probably the Bogner XTC 20th.

Here is my rig’s mini-me version.

A Boss Nextone Artist is the centerpiece. This is an outstanding solid state amp with a fantastic clean. The lead channel on this can get pretty mean and is a solid option for semi-high gain. I keep it set to EL34 but all the modes are good.

The Pantheon is great. Like the Nextone, I don’t see it get much love but its versatility is insane. It can go from a clean boost to a pretty brutal high gain that is maybe in super hot rodded Marshall territory. I typically keep it somewhere in the middle.

The AMT P2 gives that powerful 5150 feel. I’d forgotten how good this pedal is. I did a little shootout with 4 of my other gain pedals and this one came out on top through the Nextone. Thanks to @mnemonic for reminding me to revisit the AMT stuff—saved me a few bucks.

This rig is very, very good imo. It sounds great, gets damned loud (my neighbor just texted me from his pool with a song request lol), and is fairly lightweight. I could be quite happy with just this little rig for anything from apartment playing to gigging out. It probably cost about 1/4 as much as the big rig but punches way above its weight class.

Thanks man. Yeah the Kraken and Super Kraken were designed with those two amps as a baseline and they did a great job of it. I haven’t tried the smaller Kraken but imagine it would’ve worked quite well in this rig, maybe being more controllable in terms of volume.

Yeah if you use a modern cell phone, just take pics with it, and use the "upload a file" button. Works like a charm
