Well...been listening to Citadel and Portal of I for few days. Great band! The clean vocals don't bother me as much as initially thought. They're still a bit cringe from time to time, but hopefully will grow on me. Definitely waiting for Exul now.

I know exactly what you mean. I would go even further and say there's a whole genre of "leather-pants metal" and it is entirely cringe and awful.
Ne Obliviscaris are ok, I saw them live a few years ago and was quite impressed by their set. Yes, the camp vocals and the bloke prancing about with the violin were a bit much, but they had some decent riffs. IIRC, they had to find a new bassist a few years back after their original bassist turned out to be a wife beater.

Got one listen through this weekend. Lots to digest in there musically. I was, sadly, preoccupied with writing while I spun it, so only small bits stick with me. There were a few spontaneous headbanging moments, which is always a good sign for a new album I'm listening to as background noise. Hopefully this week I get a moment to just shut the world out and listen. If not for my self-driven deadlines, I would have this past weekend.
Listened yesterday at work and loved it, as expected. It had a lot more jazz fusion bits than I was expecting but they sounded great. Glad to see that their creativity is still going strong. I'll have to pick up the physical album sometime soon.

I'm loving this new album, especially Misericorde II - Anatomy of Quiescence. Don't know about you guys, but I hear some Steven Wilson/Guthrie Govan in that song! That's never a bad thing in my books.

I'm a big fan (Citadel is an all time favourite), but is anyone finding the production on Exul a bit weird? I feel like the guitars are barely there. So far it's solid but not their best IMO but we'll see if it grows on me.

I finally got around to listening to it. It fits in perfectly with their previous three albums. Stylistically it's absolutely Ne Obliviscaris, but it's not stale or formulaic nor are they repeating themselves.
As I've only given it one listen, I can't say much more other than I enjoyed it. I'll need to give it a few more spins, like their previous albums, for it to properly sink in.

I was going to say I've been listening to this album a ton but realistically I've just been listening to these 2 songs a lot
. Jarmake is right, Misericorde II is awesome. Such a good build up throughout and the tone on the first guitar solo in it is nuts. The harmonics and stuff are so tasteful when it really takes off. These 2 songs are quickly becoming staples for me for this band.

I really like this band. I remember hearing Mark Lewis say that this album got put on hold for a long time because of Covid; he lives in Nashville, they are in Melbourne (Australia had some of the strictest lockdowns). I'm glad it's finally out, and I need to give myself some time to really get into it.

I don't know that I'd call the production weird. I do think the guitar sounds on here are less edgy and modern than on their previous albums. There are moments where I feel the rhythm guitars could be louder, but on the whole the tone is much more classic thrash than modern tech death. Not really a good/bad thing, more just a 'different from what you're used to' thing.
As they continue, I wouldn't mind seeing them land somewhere in between the edgier tones and this somewhat more round / smooth tone. As it is now, it lends itself well to the somewhat dense mix they have going on, but it does at times fade into the background a bit much.
Personally I like it for exactly that reason. While it may be heresy to say on this forum, guitar doesn't always need to be 100% the star of the show. Having it drop back at points when other instruments are more active makes the whole thing breathe and feel like immersive music.
