I prefer this to anything that DT have release post Portnoy.

Most importantly, the song doesn't have Mangini's horrible drum sound.

It just isn't any good but I guess it's cool that he gets to do what he wants.

Sounds like the BGM of an ad for a local guitar shop's lessons.

That reminds of this comment I read on a post on the r/Guitar subreddit about Shawn Lane that I was so upset by that I apparently felt the need to screencap it :

Just because I'm bored at work with nothing to do, I'll comment my worthless opinion lol. But I loved the song! It's more straightforward than any DT material, and I almost, ALMOST felt for a moment he wrote some solos I could play...and then no, he went full Petrucci on me haha. I like the hard-rock vibe. Hope there is a lot of that on his album. Cool to see Portnoy on drums!

I really agree to this. I don't like his style. I ADORE HIS SKILLS AND DEDICATION though. I also love the person he is. But to me, I find most of the music a little too bland, considering his musical knowledge. It lacks attitude.

Maybe it's the tone. The tone is great, but it doesn't sound raunchy, at all! You know how Michael Romeo's tone just sounds badass? (I know thats an apples to orange comparision)

When the song started, I was thinking "wow, Petrucci is picking slower than usual". Turns out he was pacing himself out for the rest of the song. To be honest, the latest DT albums also had a fairly non-committal first single that didn't necessarily reflect the overall content of the whole album; I'd go "yeah, it's a DT single, sounds like them". This first song reminded me of that: it's John Petrucci alright, sounds like him. I'm going to way and see how the album shapes out, but I've learned not to judge the content of the albums he writes based on the first single.
It's one thing I really hardly can wrap my head around considering he's one of the two most popular reasons the Mesa Mark amps are well known; he's essentially an human billboard for those amps. The second and arguably bigger reason is obviously James Hetfield's rhythm tone on MoP and AJFA.

I can totally see someone not liking it though, but that's a different topic.

listen to it a couple of time and I really would like to like it.... but it just sounds boring to me.
The playing is great, but the composition is in mine humble opinion just boring, to easy I don't know how to say it, just general guitar music, it's to safe, never get off the track....

I liked to see Petrucci an Portnoy together, but futher then that it did not do it for me.

Anyway still looking forward to the rest of the album

Song was okay. Sounded like JP. I'm definitely in the camp that respects his ability but his playing does nothing for me.

That had some pretty neat things here and there, but as a song it was kinda boring. Also the title doesn't fit at all IMO - I was expecting something more sci-fi sounding after reading the name and seeing the cover art. Oh well, let's hope there's better songs on the album...

Evan: thanks for the transcription. I am curious how others "chunk" the very first part of the song. Would you approach the first bar as chunks of "4 4 4 4", "7 7 2", "3 4 3 6", or something else? When I listen it sonds a bit like Petrucci is doing "7 3 6", but it is rather vague. Thoughts?

Just sounds kinda scientific... Dunno  Both the artwork and title somehow made me think Scar Symmetry for some reason.

Doesn't do it for me - I know this doesn't really quantify anything but it seems like his tone or playing have gotten even more clinical over the years, if that makes sense.

I liked the song, however the mix ... not digging at all. Sounds like pre production material to me. I really hope when the full album is released I change my mind.

I am back and forth on the song. Hope the full release shows more promise. Monster of a player regardless but definitely not his best work IMO.

    Man... What a disaster

The song is utterly boring, the mix is terrible and the video is just laughable. Suspended Animation is one of my favourite instrumental albums, but this... Wtf?

    Definetely a terrible start.
